Easy way to shape internet traffic?

this would be great. manually throttling sab is just getting tiresome

Router likely has QoS which would help, but its still going to blow.

There is no way to do what you want in a manner that is both easy and effective.

Can't you run the downloads overnight?

I use netlimiter buts partly manual because you can set time frames and not high or low priority. AFAIK you can set QOS via system policies...

Dunno but probably. Router QoS blows though - you'll barely notice it if at all.

Is SAB running on a nix box? If yes then you could try introducing artificial latency (there a tool for it - I forgot the name). I suspect that will have the desired effect, even though the method is somewhat uhm unorthodox.

Can netlimiter coordinate multiple computers & ipads etc though? I don't think so tbh.

I tried finding a solution for this a few years ago but didn't come up with an answer (can't find the thread now). But a gateway PC or device is going to be required imo.

Good question, but OP wanted to filter NZB... Are your ipads running NZBz?

As as I mentioned its "partly manual" you have to toggle it and between traffic filtering pc/vm that's what I'm doing when I want to limit traffic :o

Exactly what I've been playing around with. Actual and virtual.

Hey mate, Mike Smit got something along those lines running I think. Send him a PM maybe?

You need a proper router like a Mikrotik Routerboard. I guarantee you will be able to achieve what you want to do with this router.

I run my torrents at full speed on my ADSL line home, and have QOS setup with my Mikrotik router to prioritise my traffic and I am able to have perfect call over VOIP or Skype with those torrents running at full speed.

You just need to get a router that can do proper QOS. Mikrotik is best for this, all the other router's QOS controls are a joke.

Doesn't have to be like that. A Mikrotik router will only set you back about R700, and all the help you could possibly want is available on the internet to set it up. Once it's setup, it works like a charm, it will transform your network.

Or just use an old pc, chuck an extra network card in it and install pfSense on it. pfSense does pretty decent QoS.

Too bad you giving up that easy, the mikrotik is pretty amazing. You can chuck most of your other routers away after getting a mikrotik, apart from running an adsl modem with the mikrotik. The mikrotik, if you buy the correct one, can also act as your Wireless AP, which is what mine do, and it works like a dream once set up. I can play games, do VOIP whatever, whilst forgetting about SABnzbd downloading like there is no tomorrow. It slows down when other stuff want traffic, but as soon as nothing else is doing anything, it goes mad.

Do you have any idea how the routerboard does this on a technical level? As far as I understand a router can control traffic going out but not traffic coming in.

I use Kerio Control. I have tried a lot of software and find the implementation of QoS to be the simplest on Kerio.

I give all multimedia traffic (including Roku devices) top priority. Second is online gaming.
After that I don't care.

It really works well. SABnzbd cruises along at 640 odd KB/s. Then wifey fires up a Netflix stream and SABnzbd automatically slows to accommodate it. Then I fire up my console to jam some Black Ops 2 and zero lag. All running well with a Netflix stream (or 2), downloads running and jamming online.

The trick is not to limit downloads, but rather give higher priority to outgoing traffic.

Since I got this figured out I have ended up with a maintenance free network. Don't care what anyone is doing on the line so long as movie / tv show streaming and online gaming get the highest priority on the line - and they do. Worth the effort to learn how QoS works IMO. Takes a fair amount of fiddling though.

I have been trying different options for about 3 years now. I got it right with Kerio Control. Network is seriously maintenence free.

All 3 kids love YouTube, my son is a Steam download hog, I like SABnzbd to run full steam as much as it can, Netflix/Hulu must cruise, and me and my boy don't want to lag when playing online. Before I got QoS right, I was constantly monitoring real time network starts and manually applying throttling to machines hogging the line.
Those days are gone. The line is open to everyone and traffic is prioritised. Sorted!

Sounds like a sales pitch - I know. Took me ages to get right and am seriously chuffed that I persevered and got it working.

That is the point. You prioritise outgoing to alter incoming. I found an excellent article on QoS a while back that helped me nail the concept down and the penny dropped. Will see if I can find it and post the link here.

$265 ... ouch :(

Ye - I got it when I was running my software dev business a few years back so worth the cost. Now I just pay the annual renewal for 10 users which is quite cheap and use it at home.

I have tried all the free ones and they don't come close to Kerio. Would rather keep paying.

If you have a house as busy as mine, you want something solid in place. And something that is easy to use and setup.

Anyway - that link for QoS I mentioned : http://tomatousb.org/tut:using-tomato-s-qos-system

I found it when leaning how to configure QoS on my tomato based Asus N66U. Ended up back on Kerio and applied what I learned to Kerio and viola.
