Easy way to use your computer kyboard on an Android device?

Surely it's more relevant which device you want to use it on? There might be tablets that can and phones that can't etc.

Not in my experience.

Plug it into USB otg and it goes :) (as long as it does not draw a ton of power like a PS remote, then u need a powered USB adaptor).

With a Powered USB hub I have plugged a keyboard, mouse and flash drive into my phone then worked off docs on the flash drive with the keyboard and mouse as one example (this was with my Xperia S so I plugged the phone into a LED monitor with HDMI).
What is nice about this setup is you don't have to worry about battery life as the phone is charging from the usb hub and you can plug other things in as well.

With the USB-OTG I have used an old apple keyboard that has USB ports on the end and plugged a mouse into one of those.

Also used a wireless keyboard/mouse combo and my RII keyboard.

Could you connect a camera using that as well? A self-powered usb hdd?

Never tried a camera but assume most would just show up as a drive.

Hard drives also work as long as android can read the FS (not ntfs unless you root).

I very much doubt cameras would work.

In my experience portable hard drives can be problematic, it seems to be too power hungry for some tabs & phones.

Powered portable drives work fine, the others you must have a usb powered hub.

Basically
USB-OTG for portable/no electricity needed.
Powered USB Hub for long hours or multiple devices.

Oh sorry, it's an Ascend p6.

I had it working with the standard cable, using an app called MyMobiler, which represents your phone on your PC screen, but it stopped working and was in fact a bit clunky.

All I want to do is not have to use my tiny phone keyboard while in the vicinity of my laptop.

If you want to have compete control via your PC you'll have to find something that mirrors your phone's screen. A quick Google came up with these: http://www.droidscreencast.com/ and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.bbqdroid.bbqscreen&hl=en but I cant vouch for them.

There alternatives allows limited functionality (e.g. allows you to sent sms via web interface)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.snappea
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pushbullet.android (sent text, links and images to & from phone/pc)
