Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone will be tried on bribery charges, a German court has ruled.

A panel of judges in Munich had been deliberating whether he should face trial over allegations he made a corrupt payment.

Mr Ecclestone is already facing a £90m civil claim in London's High Court.

That case was brought by a German media company, Constantin Medien, who claim they lost out financially when the sport was sold in 2006.

Ecclestone paid $100 million to have a German court dismiss corruption charges raised against him that could have resulted in a 10-year prison sentence.

The prosecutors in the case decided to accept Ecclestone's settlement offer on account of his advanced age and the anticipated difficulty of obtaining a conviction. This is in spite of the fact that Ecclestone admits to having paid millions of dollars to a German banker that has already been successfully prosecuted and is currently serving his own prison term.

Just goes to show, money talks, if you have enough you can even buy the courts.

ECCLESTONE HAILS CAPITALISM AFTER BRIBERY TRIAL DEAL

Formula One tycoon Bernie Ecclestone on Wednesday rejected criticism of his $100-million payment to end his trial in Germany on bribery charges and praised the capitalist system.

A day after the court case in Munich was spectacularly halted, the British billionaire told the German press that he could not "understand" people saying he had bought a dismissal.

"To me it looks as if the judges, in their opinion, didn't really have another choice," the 83-year-old told mass circulation Bild daily, in comments published in German.

He also expressed regret over the high sum he agreed to pay to end the four-month trial under an accord struck with prosecutors and accepted by the tribunal.

"It's certainly a bit unfortunate to pay so much money. But it's more unfortunate not to have the money.

"But actually I find this capitalist system good," he told Bild in an interview in London, just hours after the court's decision Tuesday.

The $100-million (75-million-euro) accord is believed to be the largest of its kind in German history.

Ecclestone went on trial in April on charges of paying a $44-million bribe to a Bavarian state bank executive for help in maintaining his four-decade grip on F1.

He also told Bild it had not been "funny" having to travel to Munich for two or three days a week since April for the court proceedings but he was now fully back at F1.

"But I want to say one thing, I've fallen in love a bit with Munich and its people," he added, saying he would like to return soon.

"Perhaps even for Oktoberfest," he said, referring to the legendary beer festival in the Bavarian city that begins next month.

German media commentators Wednesday were highly critical of the trial's outcome, with Bild saying "It's a mockery! Where's the justice in this?"

The Munich-based Sueddeutsche Zeitung referred to "cash-till justice" and said the Ecclestone outcome was a "peak in the still young history of the commercialisation of criminal proceedings".

So he got of the bribery charge by paying off the court.... :D He should have just "paid" the court money straight off :D

Now the stupid hobbit has had to pay off 2 people.

These are the idiots that socialists and communists point to and they give capitalism a bad reputation.

The 'stupid idiot' has a net worth of almost $5 billion. At any stage of the game he is still the one smiling.

Irrespective of the deed, I think words like stupid and idiot are not quite justified.

I watched a documentary which noted that he can pay the £60m fine once off from the interest his Trust generates every 6 weeks. It would be about 40% that interest, once off.

Apparantly the judge asked him if could raise $100mil by the end of the week, and he said, sure no problem :D

Sums it up.
With money, nothing is impossible.

Hail Hydra I say and pretty apt too given how this is happening in Germany.

And the German team Mercedes leads the F1 WC with their German driver Nico Rosberg leading the drivers championship :D
Conspiracy theories abound lol
