Hey everyone, we just moved into my father-in-law's house because the previous tenants moved out. So we try to buy electricity but it says meter blocked, first time ever that my husband and I rent a place with a prepaid meter so we didn't understand what was going on, so we thought that there was something wrong with the box. (This was Sunday) so my husband inspected the box and found that it was tampered with. He tried to UN-bypass it. Then it says Unsafe when it was correctly wired again. Apparently it needs a code so I was wondering what can we do now?

Your pre-paid elec meter will have a long number (and probably a bar code also) on the front face of the meter. I have a prepaid meter and the number I have to provide to a pre-paid elec vendor is a 11-digit number.

Meters may differ though, depending on the make, model, and the supplier of the electricity (usually your local municipality, or Eskom direct)

You could face serious legal problems & penalties if your meter has been tampered with.

Determine exactly which organisation (e.g. local municipality, or Eskom, etc) and make contact with them. Ask them the questions you have asked here.

Once you have sorted out the issue, you should be able to find an on-line seller of pre-paid electricity (e.g. I buy my pre-paid elec from the PayCity website, where you first have to register an account with them, and they will also need the pre-paid meter number.

I hope you come right. At first I hated the fact that my new home had a pre-paid elec supply, but now I welcome it as it makes one more aware of the need to cut household expenses by reducing elec usage

Also see if nearby neighbors also have pre-paid meters, and ask them for advice.

Good luck

Get an affidavit stating that that is how you found the meter.
