ECU remapping

I'm not interested in changing anything physical on the car - nothing at all. If it's not a Volvo physical part, it stays off (barring my intercooler) ;)

If Volvo themselves made exhausts and downpipes, I'd do it.

Dolby,

Guaranteed you will find quality aftermarket parts for your volvo....not made by Volvo tho.

If you car is still under warrantee, then you most certainly don't want to change any hardware.

If not, then I would consider it. Like I said previously, changing the exhaust system is highly recommended when remapping for performance. Your engine is less stressed because it can more easily flow air through the engine (more air + fuel = more power)

However, its not a must. Heck, I had my sti on stock everything running on a 'special' map, boosting 1.4 BAR making loads of power+torque and it ran beautifully :) (Now, I boost 1.2 BAR getting the same performance, just because of a full aftermarket performance exhaust)

But, since you're not pushing the engine to its limits, I'd say its ok to stick to stock everything, barring advice from your tuner. Take advice from your tuner serious!

Just my 2 counts of detonation :)

I actually did speak to him about the fuel etc and he said it's not a problem. He says Evolve have been doing this in SA for 4 years and done many Volvos, and know the requirement.

He also mentioned that it's les than a 15% power increase and not an a massive turbo withtons of other upgrades, which means it's fine :)

The car is within warranty - which is another concern :P At least with ECU, it's just about undetectable. And I intend flashing back to factory ettings on a service anyway (take a few minutes). After the warranty (2012), I'll check hardware upgrades.

Thanks for all the advice though!

Sounds good!!
So, when are you getting the work done ?

Maybe next week ... I'm not sure actually ;) Takes 5 minutes and the guy is around the corner from me as well.

I calculate late 160KW+ ATW ... which isn't *too* bad I guess. Times should be roughly 6.8 to 100km/h and a 14.8 1/4 mile (realistically). But drivability should increase too.

Thought I'd provide feedback on this :

Well - did the remap today ... car feels like a very different car! Haven't pulled off quick as yet - but normal pull off then a floor in 1st breaks traction with new tyres on dry tar ...

Figures should be 190KW/400nm - but haven't done any of my own as yet

Cool!! Post your stats...

DAAAAAAAAAYUUUUM Dolby! That's cool to hear - my mate went and did a full exhaust from headers straight through on his 3.2 GT..no remap...

The car CANNOT be driven hard in 2st and second...he says he's quite sad he did the exahust as it sound good, BUT, he now can't drive fast in those 2 gears because the car's wheels spins uncontrolably...he has to back off all the time...with ESP engaged.

Hows your 2ncd gear Dolby?

First gear I can break traction on certain road by flooring. I don't mean pull off - I mean actually planting your foot down when the clutch is depressed fully ....

2nd and 3rd are very strong : torque is huge and comes in low down. Makes simple driving easier than it was as well!

I've got a similar power remap on the T5, and it sometimes loses traction going 1st to 2nd. Probably just had cold tyres.
I'm not sure what the stability control thinks of the extra power. Does it compensate for the extra power, or does it throw a fat fit and do nothing? My wheels seem to spin and spin if I pull off too hard.

It seems now to be particularly easy to also get the gadgets to kick in around a circle or bend. The car reacts by taking power away from some of the wheels, even if I floor it around a nice smooth bend, it refuses to give me more. Which I suppose is a good thing!

Hey Dolby,

Sorry to necro your thread but I'm also considering doing the same upgrade to my S40. How, 2 years down the line, is everything going for you (provided you still have the car)? Any regrets? Recommendations?

Do you have contact details for the guys who did your car? I can't seem to find a website for them.

Thanks

The boost will go up to around 1.2 BAR - Just remember that its a low pressure turbo so this figure is not too much.

If it is a petrol car, that is anything but low pressure.

Still love it :P

No regrets at all.

Speak to the guys at http://www.volvocarclubsa.co.za ... they've got better software than what I got 2 years back

Thanks for the feedback. No reliability problems? Did you re-flash back to the stock when you took it in for a service?
I'm a member on those forums, they also recommend Deon. How is the new software better?
You based in Cape Town?

Yea - Deon did it for me as well ...

I re-flashed back to stock the first service ... the second one I left but they seemed to bring it back to default ... and the last service was no issue with it done. However, it seems to depend on the dealer you go and how good buddies you are with them. To be safe, I'd reflash to stock ...

I had an issue which I'm not sure what the cause was - a cracked control arm. They replaced under warranty though.

The old power is 169kw/320nm at the fly ... I now get 151kw/360nm on a dyno - so a *guess* would be 190kw/400nm at the fly. It's more responsive too ... but I didn't have my standard one too long to compare :P

I'm JHB and should easily get a real sub 7 seconds to 100km/h - but it seems the real power is 2nd and 3rd gear
