Anyone in Edenvale getting terrible speeds? I've tried on Gconnect, Afrihost and FNBConnect, all the same. Pages loading slow and stuttery with bad latency. Streaming/buffering bad. File downloads going at about 13kb/s on a 1 meg line. It's just been happening the last two days.

Speed test here is giving me this for Johannesburg on FNBConnect --

Download Speed: 443 kbps (55.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 414 kbps (51.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 47 ms
16 October 2013 12:47:06 PM

And this  for international --

Download Speed: 77 kbps (9.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 359 kbps (44.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 217 ms
16 October 2013 12:48:54 PM

Anyone else in this area getting problems?

I've had these problems for over a year, seems to have gotten worse over the last 6 months. The story from Telkom is that the exchanges are congested, the ESRs sre congested and they aren't sure when or if it will be fixed.

From 17:00 to 23:00 I can write my internet off. Weekends start from as early as 08:00.

Ja, I know, it's k@k, Glingfram. My speeds, in the main, had been somewhat decent (if the usual ~90kb dl on a 1 meg line is decent) until about that last 6-month timeframe you mention. For me, for the last 6 months, it's around business hours, 8AM - 5PM, that I get problems, with the dl speed dropping to around 50-60kb, which I've lived with. This now, the last two days going at 10kb, seems like a new story. Or maybe it's the old story but with an even more ****ty ending.

Hi There,
Your symptoms are congestion related. Telkom is I am sure aware of the problem but seldom give commitment as to when it will be fixed.

Added pressure by placing a fault may assist.

Hi, Tim. Yeah, I've placed a fault with Telkom. Placed it the same day I posted this. They gave the dude the wrong address  and then closed the fault . So now I'm on the runaround with them to get it reopened and someone sent back out. You know, the usual.

As for it being congested-related, I don't know. We'll see what the guy says if he ever comes.

Same in Greenstone Hill. It started on the the 7th of October and seemed temporarily resolved last Tuesday. But now, no connection again...!

So frustrating! I get various Telkom calls a day. Yet, only one technician has openly admitted that it is due to congestion, while others seem totally clueless. One guy I questioned about the delayed response time compared to previous instances (it took him over three days to react to my fault log), was bragging how many new lines their currently connecting in the neighborhood... Technicians are currently very busy, he apologized....

Sick! The exchange is congested, but more and more new lines are being connected; and Telkom technicians are too busy to react to faults.

Hurray Telkom, please sort your sh** out!! :-(

Hi gents

I stay in Edenvale. In the last two months I have experienced extremely high latency and jitter from time to time. However, as of yesterday I now no longer have any connection. Got hold of mweb and they are not aware of any issues in the area and say that there will be a turnaround time of 7 days.

Anyway, guess I'm just waiting for it to be escalated and a technician to be sent out and take a look.

Thanks for your input, guys. Yeah, it seems like we've got a growing problem around here. When I first moved to Illiondale about 4 years ago, my speeds were decent, like I mentioned above. There were other problems now and then, like dropouts, port issues, storm issues, etc., but the speeds were pretty stable. The last little while though... hectic. It's probably what Tim says and what hilrap says the Telkom dude was bragging about -- more and more people are moving to this area and it's now reached a congestion tipping point.

The Telkom guy came today and said it is most likely congestion. He's escalated it but says he's not sure if much can be done. So now I'm basically getting 384kb -- and worse -- speeds on a 1meg line whilst paying 1meg ISP prices. So, yay, when (if) the lines are upgraded in November and onwards and my line goes to 2megs, I might be able to get back to the 1meg speeds I used to be getting whilst paying for 2meg connectivity

So today I was contacted by someone from Telkom D-Tech, I think it was called. He said his tests showed no congestion on this exchange. According to his draft test (graft test? -- didn't catch it), everyone on the board has up to 150mb of transfer, and the most congested it's ever got, he said, is down to 100mb. So he doesn't think congestion is the problem. He doesn't know what the problem is. So kind of stuck with these crap speeds now it looks like. Anyway, that's my story.
