As a new arrival from Vodacom I would like some info on EDGE.
I live in a country area so use GPRS, not likely to 3G in my lifetime. Is EDGE available countrywide,? if so what do I have todo to change my current settings to use it.?

if the area is supported by EDGE connectivity it will automatically connect through edge. u have to have a edge supported phone of course.

phone your service provider and find out if it is supported in your area and if there is a rollout plan for 3g

Forget about vodacom. I have never had any joy out of gprs or edge. Disconnects, dns problems, slow transfers. THEY SUCK!!! Ive been using mtn edge on prepaid, WOAH what a difference. Its not adsl but its pretty good. Long live MTN (but please lower data tarrifs PLEASE!!!)

I use MTN GPRS on prepaid. Most of the time it's excellent. But disturbingly often, the connection just... well... starts to 'fake it'. :)

What I mean by that is that my connection indicator on XP shows that data is going out... but nothing is coming in. And DNS lookups just fail (which I've verified from the command line).

Anyone else experience this?

I called MTN customer service, and the only answer I could get out of them was 'congestion', which has left me unsatisified. :)

Disconnecting and reconnecting sometimes fixes it, and sometimes it doesn't. I've tried using other DNS servers at these times, with varying results.

How many prepaid bundles can you "load" in a month?

On MTN, only one per SIM card. So if, for example, you load a R220 (350MB) data bundle on the 5th April, and you use it all up by the 25th April, you can only load another on the 5th May.

During that time (26th April - 5th May), you are charged an 'out-of-bundle' price per MB, which is usually lower than the non-bundle price, but higher than your in-bundle price.

Apparently what some people do to get around this is to use more than one SIM. Once you've used up the bundle on one SIM, you switch to the other SIM.

Here's the price list:

http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=248769

So for example, 350MB works out to 63c/MB in-bundle, and R1.50/MB out-of-bundle.

you can buy your prepaid from shoprite and save another R20.
so the bundle works out to 58c/MB

Check our coverage: http://www.mtn.co.za/default.aspx?pid=11789#

Like the others said, you switch between edge and grps when and where there is coverage.
