Hey,guys.

Edge2 should be coming out at the end of this year it doubles the download speed it 500-600kbps.
Egprs will have up to 1.2mbps not to sure when that is coming out.

Oh and would we all need new devices now to use this service?

There is no such thing as EDGE2.

EDGE or Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution is the last technology used on 2G networks to squeeze out the most from their 2G packet data hardware.

Evolved EDGE (which I guess is what you are talking about) will be able to reach speeds approaching 1mbps.

Few networks will bother with this since they are already using 3G networks and looking into 4G options. They have no interest in tinkering with 2G technologies. Proof of this is the fact that talks about Evolved EDGE surfaced in Q3 2006 - and after almost 2 years nothing materialized from it.

the last time i read on the siemens website edge2 or e edge is coming out at the end of the third quarter 2008.

There is a massive addvantage there is no hardware upgrade only software.

Most networks and people are already using 3G based services for data. The reason this has been in the pipeline for 2 years now is because no one really uses 2G for data anymore.

I'm on the Natal north coast for the weekend and I cannot receive a 3G signal from either Vodacom or MTN. I'm using GPRS right now. :(

Most networks that support 3G do not have nationwide 3G coverage even though they may have nationwide coverage with the 2G GSM network. 3G is generally only deployed in the major towns and cities. Evolved EDGE with it's faster speeds is ideal for all the coverage areas where 3G will not be deployed.
