Anyone know if it's possible to do this without Dreamweaver?
I've searched the net but not really finding anything useful

A DW template consists of standard HTML code and special template tags, which only matters when you are working inside DW or Adobe Contribute. So, you can edit a .dwt file with any text editor, just be careful not to change the template tags. Alternatively, download a trial of DW from the Adobe website or Microsoft Expression, which also honors DW templates. BTW, what do you want to change in the template?

Thanks but this doesn't seem to work...
My template houses the header, footer and navigation. The drop-down nagivation consists of styled lists. So technically, if I want to delete a drop-down option, I should just be able to delete the list point. This works fine when I do it Dreamweaver but the changes are not being reflected in the other pages if I edit the .dwt in any other editor...

Usually when you make template changes in Dreamweaver, it will prompt you to apply the changes to the other pages so I'm assuming this is the problem with using a different editor?

I also thought this was just straight-foward HTML and as long as the tags stayed in tact, there wouldn't be a probem using a different editor.

Even a simple title change doesn't work....

Mmm... I see, should've explained to you what you already know now. The main purpose for the template is to make changes in a single place and then propagate it through all the pages, instead of having to edit every single page. The actual website, which is a product of the template, has no knowledge or integration with the template at run-time, ie when the site is published. I once had to make changes to several dozen pages where I could not use DW, I used an editor such as Notepad++, loaded all the pages in the editor, created a macro for each change and ran the macro on each page.

What a mission... It's quite disappointing.
I can only assume then that when you apply the changes, Dreamweaver is basically copying & pasting the code into all the different pages for you.

Thanks DearHeart

Cos I'm not the person who'll be editing it. The guy who will be doesn't want to use Dreamweaver. Guess I'm gonna have to convince him
