I recently downloaded and installed Edubuntu 14.04 ... and hated it. The interface is not as customizable as 9.10 is (the version I had on my computers last).

4-year olds are going to be working on the PCs.

I'm looking for an OS that has a bunch of educational games on for kids ranging from 4yo to 10yo.

Edubuntu 9.10 met my needs ... and I'm considering installing that on the computers again.

I'm not keen on downloading too many things from the internet since I have 45 computers.

My skills are also limited. I don't know if and how to download games on Linux and then compiling them into an installable iso.

45 PCs? If they are identical all you need to do is have one install and load programs and copy the hard drive image over.

cant you just clone one machine after installing the games etc on it?

edit: i see this was already suggested :/

In the Edubuntu installer, you can also choose the fallback mode which will give you the traditional desktop environment. Other than that, what's missing in 14.04? Debian-Edu might also be a good candidate, perhaps try it out?

If it's Linux, the PCs don't even need to be identical.

Use Clonezilla for cloning.

+1

I usually use Clonezilla Server for over-the-network installs for a 40pc lab. Takes about 30mins to image (all concurrently) a win7+ubuntu image.

Let me know if you'd want a setup as such, I can walk you through it.

EDIT: just looking at the thread now, trust a couple of geeks to over complicate things to "make it easier" :D

PS: On an already-installed system, you can also install the old gnome session by running "sudo apt-get install gnome-session-flashback" in the terminal or installing gnome-session-flashback from software center. You'll then be able to choose that session from the login screen.

What happened to OP?

I installed 9.10. Took me hours to configure everything. Will definitely try another option next time.

I will experiment with the suggestions made later this term. I'm currently just too busy with other things. IT is not my only subject ATM. I'm juggling computer classes with other subjects and sports and a couple of other things.

Hopefully things will quiet down towards the end of the term (points and laughs at myself - fat chance that will happen)

I would still use edubuntu. Remember you are old and will have troubles adapting to a different UI. A young kid will most likely not suffer the same way you are.

What don't you like about Edubuntu 14.04 though?

Can't customize it as much as earlier versions.

In 9.10 and even 12.04 I could Make everything much larger than in 14.04.
In 9.10 I could also take away the Applications and system menus. I'm working with kids, I don't want them to go messing about in the system settings thinking it's just another game. Also in 14.04 the games are dispersed with all the other applications in the applications menu. The launcher on side will also not work.

Im sorry thats all you saw there. Its a human thing. Many people learn to do something one way, and are so stuck in their ways, struggle to adapt to changes. This is especially true with user interfaces. My comment was not an insult, but a technical observation. Hopefully you will consider this point when deciding on doing this.

My mom would struggle to use a samsung as she is used to the crackberry UI. She is so stuck in her ways she flat out refuses to even try. She finds the change scary and confusing. However give a 10 year old the same phone and they`ll learn its UI quickly.
