Just had to mention how impressed I was ......

As most of you minnions and like minded folk know, I reside in a remote village surrounded by some of the oldest sands of time!

We use to have a very good private school up here, one of the best in all of the land, producing engineers and doctors....

The teacher's were the best......whenever the mine would advertise a vacancy at the school, there would be a stream of educators clamouring to get in......

Fast forward...... along came AA (yes! we have this awkward implementation in Nam also) .... and teachers were no longer employed because they were the best to pass on knowledge to the students, but because the law said they needed to be favoured first....

Who suffered the most...... well the students..... averages plummeted and nobody seemed to give a hoot.... meanwhile all the white teachers that still taught at the school, sent their offspring to boarding schools in a few of the Republic's best schools......

We never forced our kids to go, as they are self motivated achievers and are top of their grades.....

MiddlebornMoose often landed up teaching the kids in the grade above her's and moaned at the teacher as they could not pronounce words correctly..... cut a story short, she has approached us and requested to be sent to boarding school as she feels she cannot achieve her full potential here.....

LastBornMoose is applying to three Uni's next year, (think she want's to learn how to build shacks and tear down statues) , and last night came to me to ask me to explain 3d Maths vectors.... :wtf: Off course , I was last at school 30 years ago and had no idea what she was ranting on about.....

She already does extra Math (HG) over and above what the school teaches. For this she has a private tutor.

I asked her to ask her Maths teacher to explain.... to which she replied the guy is useless , does not explain nothing to the class, just writes the work on the board with no explanation..... I have heard tales about this guy, he made the national newspapers a few years back for lewd conduct..... seem's to worry more about his bling car and fancy shoes.... yet, the school is fully aware of his track record and do not seem to have the balls to do what they need to do..... I was asked nicely by HO and the girls not to rock the boat as they are still students here.....(This will be changing in the new year)

Anyhow, so there we were , stuck at home with 3D Vectors, when I remembered that Youtube was our friend....

In a matter of minutes, I had downloaded a teacher who made the lesson as easy as putting beans on yer toast...

What the local teacher failed to explain in a week of classes, FirstbornMoose picked up in 10 minutes....and now we know....... Youtube is a valuable resource that thirty years ago could have changed the world....

The poorly equipped AA teachers, who are detrimental to ALL the kids they teach, can take a flying leap ...

Last night just before bed, LastBornMoose came into the room, smiling from ear to ear, "Thanks Papa! " , she was relived to be able to learn as much as she wanted, without the liability of a teacher who could not teach....

Youtube is a game changer in remote communities.....

(Why am I posting this here, well for a guy in a small place with few friends, I had to share my joy with some of you)

:D

A good few years ago YouTube & I taught my 2 daughters to knit.

They got some frilly wool & wanted to knit their own scarves, kinda knew the basic stitch but didn't know how to start from scratch. I'm divorced & can crochet but never mastered the needles so wasn't any help, but managed to save the day by firing up the tube & finding step by step instructions.

Instant hero, just add YouTube :)
