eee PC

the eeepc isnt meant to be your primary laptop, so stop thinking of it like that. 4gb is massively more than you need when doing the odd bit of surfing, skype and msn. it's like a useable smartphone, that you can type on, with a screen 4 times the size of a smartphone, all for half the price.

:-) ok, so what i mean if you already have a laptop, to use as a laptop, this is just an "occasional" goodie you can throw in your briefcase, use it in a meeting for notes, sit on the couch and browse a bit of amazon/ebay/googling. if you want more storage then get a usb key, or map a network drive.

the thing is brilliant.

OK, so what's the point? I can can do all of that on my Nokia except map a drive.

I want one purely as a secondary laptop for internet and email on the go... so when I fly to Cape Town, etc. I can take a small laptop with and not have to lug around my big laptop

You actually have a valid point there. The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet is direct competition to it.

I guess it's a matter of preference really. It's what you prefer. Would you want an ultra portable internet device like the 770 or a more traditional laptop experience like the Eee? The Eee is also $60 cheaper...

Both have their pros and cons. In the end, it's user preference. The Eee is a great little PC. It's superb as a 2nd laptop. It's small, portable, cheap and fast.

@Sparhawk - is the 8G model the only one with the removable flash hdd,or can you do it on the 4G as well?

Also, how big is Ubuntu? I been meaning to get into Linux for work purposes, and this might be a perfect opportunity.

as far as I know the 8G and eventually the 16G [yep thats right - straight off ASUS page] will have an actual reader - to get to the reader you will probably have to open the eeePC but who cares I'll do it.

As for Ubuntu it depends on what applications you want to keep - the smallest stripped down version I saw was +- 300MB, I stand to be corrected. I am wondering if you can't put Damn Small Linux on it - i have a version on my jetflash which is 50MB big [will try this out and see:D]

For myself I am thinking of installing a GPS unit then mounting it in my car as a GPS / MP3 uber player :D [then I can go WiFi hunting in style:p]

then dont buy it.
if it was "the" product that fulfilled everyones dreams we wouldnt be having this conversation. so obviously there is a small niche market for it, and i appreciate that.

The market isn't that small, actually. Asus are expecting to sell 5 000 000 by the end of this year.

I read asus is releasing a whole new range this year... anyone know what?

I don't think it's been officially announced. All just rumors at this stage me thinks.

5 million is too high a number. it wont happen.
that represents 2% of global pc sales annually.
<edit> comment in bad taste removed, i'm in a fsking bad mood and dont need people telling me they can read a product release that says xyz when they have no bloody experience of this industry
