Johannesburg - Municipal coalition talks between the Democratic Alliance and other opposition parties are one step closer to finalisation.

"I think it's beyond the stage of arguing about theoretical ideological concepts and into the era of practical arrangements," DA chairperson of the federal council James Selfe said on Thursday morning.

Selfe said this did not involve talking about positions yet, but about the "underlying principles" that would make up a coalition.

He said "coalition talks are continuing and are reasonably positive".

Meanwhile the African National Congress in Johannesburg region has sent out a note to branch members to reassure them that the party was working hard on the regional, provincial and national level "to ensure that the ANC governs Johannesburg and all other Gauteng metros including Mogale City".

According to the note, the ANC was talking "to all parties represented in council except the DA".

This follows leaks from both ANC and DA sources on Wednesday that the DA and the Economic Freedom Fighters have made deals to oust the ANC in the Johannesburg and Tshwane metros, where the two parties had a strong showing in last week's local government elections.

Mayoral committee positions for EFF

According to the notice, "the negotiations are delicate and should be treated as such. You are requested to desist from discussing and issuing statements in the media on the coalition government discussions.

"We assure that the leadership is working hard to ensure that we govern. Your patience in this regard will be appreciated," the note said.

Business Day reported that the DA and EFF on Wednesday discussed the splitting of power in Modimolle and Thabazimbi in Limpopo, while the DA offered the EFF mayoral committee positions in Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni in exchange for their support.

The EFF earned 20.24% of the vote in Thabazimbi while the DA got 18.52% and the ANC 45.3%. In Modimolle the ANC got 47.58% of the vote, followed by the DA with 24.11% and the EFF with 19.44%, providing the opposition with an opportunity to govern.

According to a Business Day source, the DA has committed itself in principle to letting the EFF govern in those two municipalities, but first had to consult its national leaders.

The ANC's national executive committee is set to have a four-day meeting, starting on Thursday, to discuss coalitions and the elections outcome.

Announcements of coalition deals in Gauteng's three metros and the 24 other hung municipal councils are expected either on Sunday or early next week.

Wish the parties would tell us officially who they are involved in talks with

i'm optimistic at the end of the day both parties want the same thing (considering EFF is corrupt to the bone). The want to help the people out. And now perhaps the EFF will see the reality of how to govern communities instead of taking everything from the whites. They will now be able to help each other build a more self sufficient society instead of the the racially divided mess the ANC has created.

I think EFF working with DA might lead to EFF disappearing eventually pending the resolve of Malema and how corrupt the EFF really is.

That would fall under the category "wishful thinking"

Something about the thought of these parties dividing up the "loot" they've won just feels wrong to me.

I get that it is how it must be done, but dishing out municipalities like bargaining chips undermines the importance of good governance.

I do trust that the DA will act in good faith with our best interests at heart, though.

I like it.

Makes me think of children in class being forced to work together on a project.

Unfortunately, that is the basis of a coalition, all parties involved must win something.
If the coalition focusses on the ball, then the other issues should also sort themselves out. The senior party to the coalition should be able to lead by example.

I am particularly hoping the Tshwane coalition is going to work, the sooner the anouncements are made, the better for al of us.

It's just how it works and how much pressure the DA and put on e.g. EFF, UDM etc This is kinda how it worked with Cpt when the DA took it initially in combination with Pritricia De Lille's ID party. It does however rely on good governance and I'm sure the paperwork will include brutal litigation should corrupt dealings be found, heck might even involve exclusion of the party without losing the municipality.

How much longer until the 14 day period to form government expires? I just want it to pass so we can welcome our (hopefully new) overlords.

I have the same feeling. Malema/EFF is to stubborn and hard headed. At the end of the day they will rather support the ANC than the DA.

It will cost them votes to do that.

They cant COPE with the result. :crylaugh:

Didn't the ID side with the ANC, which eventually led to their downfall? I think the DA had to pretty much form a coalition with every other small party...

The word is Volatile! But, in the end, the EFF want to have their piece of the pie, and will go with anyone to get it. So I think they will cave on some of their terms.

My view - which may be completely wrong is as follows:

EFF have some tough decisions to make as their next step could define them. If they side with the ANC and continue on a race based political agenda, I see them being swallowed up into the ANC. This would mean the end of the Juju and all his power and ambition. So I cant see this being first prize, unless Juju knows his limits and takes the easy way out with some big favours being owed to him for life.

If the EFF side with the DA then they will have to take a back seat in terms of their radical agenda and actually move SA forward. This might mean 4 years of accepting the way the DA does things but giving them the opportunity to focus on destroying the ANC in the process and gaining mass appeal.

The ANC will look inward and decide are they going to focus on the rural vote or are they going to change, I assume it will be the former. Thus if the EFF pips the ANC to the rural masses and the ANC have lost the new Black middle class vote, SA could be a very different place.

Which ever way this election goes, all I hope for is a good ruling party and an equally as good opposition party. This can only lead to better things at grass roots level.

I worry about this.

People vote for the EFF because they want radical change their supporters would have voted for the DA if they thought it would be the same thing.
I don't think that the EFF are going to be dissolved into the DA. If anything they will infect them.

Announcements on Monday for some Metro's, officially they have till 20 August (14 days after election results called).
