Johannesburg - Three top officials of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) - Khanyisile Litchfield-Tshabalala, Mpho Ramakatsa and Andile Mngxitama - were expelled from the party on Saturday, EFF chairperson Dali Mpofu announced in Johannesburg.

This means they also lose their seats in Parliament.

Lucky Twala - the fourth of the "Group of Four" who were suspended in February, was suspended for three years. This will fall away within a year if he complies with certain conditions.

In terms of these conditions, he must apologise in writing to the secretary general of the EFF, Godrich Gardee; he must attend Parliament within 10 days; and he must not be found guilty of any offence contained in the EFF Constitution read with the Code of Conduct and Revolutionary Discipline.

Offences

Ramakatsa was the party's national co-ordinator; Mngxitama was a member of the interim central command team and the "war council" until the party's National People's Assembly in Mangaung in December; and Litchfield-Tshabalala was a member of the interim central command team until the National People's Assembly.

Twala was an "ordinary" member.

Their offences included speaking to the media after their suspension, implying financial impropriety, being involved in leaking information to the media, and not attending the State of the National Address.

Mngxitama, in particular, has been making public statements criticising the party's leadership and integrity.

The EFF gained 25 seats in Parliament last year, when its leader Julius Malema made a surprise comeback after being expelled as leader of the African National Congress Youth League and formed his own party.

The EFF has dominated headlines with their "pay back the money" refrain regarding non-security related expenditure at President Jacob Zuma's home in Nkandla.

Terrible offenses, nothing innocent like stirring up division and polarization in S.A.
