The EFF is working on establishing a labour union to address challenges faced by workers, its leader Julius Malema told a May Day rally on Sunday.

The EFF is working on establishing a labour union to address challenges faced by workers, its leader Julius Malema told a May Day rally in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, on Sunday.

Through its labour desk, the EFF has been helping workers notwithstanding their political party affiliation. Led by Hlengiwe Mkhalipi, the labour desk allows walk-ins at the party’s headquarters by workers experiencing issues.

Malema said despite its successes, the party is continually being taken to court by companies claiming the EFF does not have the jurisdiction to challenge worker-related issues as it is not a labour union.

“The labour desk of the EFF is doing very well. It is fighting battles day in and day out,” Malema said. “You know what they've resorted to now? Every time the EFF goes to intervene, they take us to court and say we’re not a union. We are fighting whether we are a union or not. As long as a black person is exploited, we are going to fight with those who exploit black people.”

Because of this, the EFF has decided to establish its own union, he said. The union will push the EFF’s policy position of insourcing workers, especially security staff and cleaners in municipalities and government departments.

I struggle to see how the EFF wants to maintain being both a trade union and a political party, but then again, they worm themselves into or create labour disputes to promote themselves. For them, to be workable, they would need to constitute a labour arm /cough militant arm, according to their above spokesperson. Now I know it is said in the article quoted by the OP, but who in their ranks will run the trade union? As I see it, the trade unionists will be EFF leadership stooges, but that is the norm with social ‘democrats’. Something tells me that the EFF is doing this to move liability onto the trade union.

The EFF should be wary, such moves tend to spin into new organisations.

Its all a front for what they really are. a Racist organization that wants a genocide hiding under nice words and special titles. And for reasons that still escape me, they'll continue making inroads slowly into all government areas including labor as the ANC policy on them is to pretend they don't exist.
 
This will be a hit. Unions in SA are geared towards anything that is against their interests. Only way the ANC can keep the unions on their side is if they promise to steal all the assets from the GEPF.

One thing is for sure, they will be radical, just look at how they damaged businesses for political gain. A union would be a new cash injection for them, looting to follow.

Nothing racist here. Even the perceived "right wing" "whites only" Solidarity make no mention of race.

It's simple, as a political party they cannot get involved in labour disputes, they cannot mobilise in the workplace and they cannot represent workers in disputes, yes I know they do get involved but that's not the point.

If they have a union they would be allowed to mobilise in the workplace, they can sit at the negotiating table with other unions and negotiate increases and other working conditions, they will be able influence things like the minimum wage and other basic conditions of employment, they will have an unhindered access to thousands of workers accros the country, they can publicize their labour victories, it will be a very good thing for them if they manage to pull it off.

Yes, they will be radical, but the EFF might as well set themselves up to implode like Rome. What is telling is that they struggle to align current unions with them, otherwise they wouldn't have explored this option.

Shouldn't worker unions be independent and not be involved in politics at all (as in siding with parties, etc not opposing exploitative legislation against workers)?

Malema will do anything to stop EFF from becoming a dead meme.

First question to ask yourself is, what is a union? The union is not just a name or the leadership, a union is the workers, and workers enjoy all the rights of association that everyone does, if they, through their union decide to support a particular party that is no one's problem.
 
The EFF is going to get their asses kicked because SA already have too many unions and the membership is shrinking. AMCU said no because they did no want to share their piece of the pie.

These unions does not like competition, blood regularly flows between them and as we've see in Brackenfell the EFF is really the Economic Freedom Failures more than anything else.

It is also funny how non of the EFF leadership have ever worked a single day. They are all career politicians that know little about the dynamic of the factory floor.

Where we've seen the EFF tried to muscle in was in cases where the workers have already been fired. So good luck.

SA also had too many political parties before the EFF joined, some unions just exist for the sake of it just like political parties, there will always be space for someone with different ideas to represent workers, itlf the EFF can do that then they will be fine.
