Hi there,

can anyone propose a good firewall setup and router when using iBurst (or any other broadband connection for that matter)? I am using a software solution but the lag is a bit annoying and I am concerned about security I am scared of being hacked.

IPCop or Smoothwall :-

what do you need ?

An old PC - PII will do fine, it'll need an old harddrive (1gig will do), 32meg RAM, a video card (any old piece of k@k will do), a CDROM and 2 Network cards.
If you had to buy that second hand, if it cost anymore than R300 then that's too much - you may even be able to snag one for free.

A Switch - a 4 port will do - you can get them for under R200 easy

Network cables

This is all assuming that your iBurst modem can hookup via a standard Ethernet cable, in which case, you'll run it in PPPoE mode.

Alternatively, you can buy a router which will do the same thing as IPCop or Smoothwall, but probably with less options :-

Thank you, the hardware solution from Sybaritic is exactly what I am looking for. Placing an order for it now!
