greetings all. first post here, glad to be a new member of the community. until recently, i was a poor man spending all my money on 3g bandwidth, but changes in my environment required me finally get an ADSL line from Telkom. understandably apprehensive, i found out this wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be.

lets get a few things straight first... i'm not employed by telkom, never have / never will, and I'm staying in a pretty far out area - Thohoyandou in Limpopo - about 100kms from the Zimbabwean border. i've got a contract of employment for a year up here.

managed to track down the telkom store in town on 14 february, placed order for a DSL line and a new residential telephone line (there was none currently working in the house). was told to phone 10219 in about a week to find out the progress. a few days later, a telkom tech arrived saying he wanted to do the installation then and there(!!!) but there was a problem with an underground cable at the hospital (where my residence is). luckily for me, the provision for the cable had already gone through and he reckoned in about a weeks time he could do everything for me.

whatever, i thought. believe it when i see it.

10 days passed, telkom phoned to say the guy was coming to do the installation tomorrow. joy! the next day, no techie arrived, and I was understandably quite annoyed. i managed to contact him on his cell (given to me by 10219) and he apologised but said he had arranged for someone to come and do the line tomorrow.

and lo, at 10 a.m the next day, techie arrived and did absolutely everything (including going to the local exchange to replace a wire he thought may be faulty) and now I have an extremely quick 4mbps line, and i'm getting download speeds (during the day! with IS semi-shaped!) of 3000kbps & upspeeds of 400kbps.

total time from application to installation & verification : 16 days.
not bad for a small town in the northern most reaches of our country.

thanks for reading my story. believe it or not, i dont work for telkom!

my line took about 2 weeks, but it was a mission because of the complex we lived in the pipes where blocked from old mud and concrete so the technie and i went spelunking in the gunk:P
