I've been at varsity for a couple of years (and still have 2 more to go as my degree includes Honours before one graduates) and there is something that has been bothering me for a little while.

I work quite hard at my degree (Commerce) - I do usually go out once a week in term time although sometimes I don't go out at all when I have a project/test on Monday/Tuesday. However what I seem to be realising is that there are some people I know who party hard and yet do better than me (5-10%) when the overall mark comes out. I'm not talking about 50s to 60s but rather between 70s and 80s and, in some cases, 80s to 90s. I've come to the conclusion that they either can 'cram' quite effectively OR they have better time management techniques where they are more effective with the time that they've got. I can seriously learn only for 20-30mins before I get 'distracted' by something - whether it be Facebook, cellphone or TV.

Look I still do reasonably well, but I really do think that I can do a bit better. I'd just to like to hear from forumites what their time management techniques were at university while studying for tests and exams :). Please don't suggest cramming... I really can't do that as I'll get way too stressed out.

Ever thought maybe you are just more stupid than them? I mean, they're not asking these inane questions..

Possibly. However these are people from the same school as me and who were in the same classes (in terms of academic ability) as me generally speaking.

Maybe they can apply the work better. I know plenty of people who study their arses of and then examiner asks application question and bang.. They're out. They could've focused on different parts of the work - the right parts- and you did wrong.

And that makes you eqally clever cause?

Well people who are in the same 'sets' at school generally have similar academic abilities - obviously there'll be a difference within that class, but it was generally 5-10% either way of the average of the class.

Some people just have to work/study harder than others....

WTF? Is this OBE? In which case probably even malema could pass it. We had Higher grade and Standard grade. That's it. Your school lied to you.

These guys are just rattling your cage.

Some people are really good at time management, I am atrocious.

I have a very good and very old friend who is really good at time management. Because I have known him so long I know that his IQ is similar to mine.

But he got his BSc Engineering in 4 years cum laude, and was on the SRC and also very involved in rag organising and social activities.

I always got the impression that he never wasted any time, it was like 50% work and 50% social.

Whereas I was like 25% work, 50% fooling around and 25% social.

So he did better at university, and was also very active socially.

I could never do that (still can't), although I did manage it for a year during some postgrad degree - my results were good, but my social life suffered - I still wonder what happened to that cool chick in Cape Town that I had neglected too much

Yes I was on OBE but I think you misunderstood what I said. The grade was about 150 people. And there were about 6 sets, Set 1 - generally people who got over 80%, Set 2: 70-80% and so on.

Spelling Nazi. Poor time management. Do not spent time on the trivial, focus on the bigger issues!

My time is so efficiantly managed that I have bucket loads left over to hound clumsy typers like yourself down...

Still rate this thread 'Ginger'

Sound to me Chris you have attention deficit disorder.

Aandag afleibaar.

Maybe study techniques will Work. A better study environment?

OR maybe you have less gray matter for this than them. You might have more grey stuff for say building things or cooking things than them. Not all people are equal.
