I applied to have my circuit changed from 384 to 512, checking the router I see that it has now changed but it sooooooooooo slow. I mean I can't access any international sites, it took me a good few minutes to load this page (slower than my gprs connection).

I've tested it from different PCs, I've reset the router, I've disabled my virus and firewall, none of these things make any difference. What other things could I troubleshoot to get to the bottom of this?

Checking the router my Line Attenuation is 29.0 db(down) and 23.0 db (up).
My Noise Margin is 29.5 db (down) and 13.0 db (up) which from what I can gather is acceptable.

I've phoned Cybersmart twice, both times they told me there are no problems on their side and that the person involved with line speed changes will only be able to help on Monday.

Any thoughts on what is causing this massive slow down?

Weird. The line stats look fine to me too. Any crc errors?

The problem is probably on the Telkom side though...Cybersmart a/c work for all speeds afaik.

Is the latency fine?

What would be the best way to test latency and CRC?

Pinging www.mybroadband.co.za [41.203.17.1] with 32 bytes of data:

How does that compare to you guys?

Your latency is acceptable. (I get 28ms...but if you are in Cpt then that would explain the difference.)

CRC errors are listed on the page with SNR on my router...they might call it something different on yours. Just look for something involving errors. Errors can cause the latency to be fine but surfing slow....But with those line stats you shouldn't really get a lot of errors.

It's @adsl.cybersmart.co.za.

I've tried @fast. ; @oneprice and @cybersmart.co.za. None of them authenticate. :(

You need to Call Cybersmart and ask them to change it before you change it on the Router.

Well by some miraculous action it seems to be running (and at 512kbps). Thanks to all those who put forward suggestions.

I'm with Cybersmart as well and I have such bad lag quite a lot of the time. Today I was playing Halo and the lag is just too damn much. Cybersmart said its Telkom and Telkom said its Telkom. Its driving me insane at the moment. This has been going on for a year or more. Today was just the last straw. Just bought a prepaid webafrica account to see if it will make a difference.
