Johannesburg - Ekurhuleni metro police have begun the process of confiscating and destroying any structures in Duduza which are in contravention of by-laws.
In the past few weeks, several structures which had been put up at taxi ranks and other locations obstructing pedestrians and car traffic had been removed, spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said on Wednesday.
He said Duduza was riddled with illegal structures put up indiscriminately without following municipal procedures; buildings which were encroaching onto sidewalks and whose owners had no regard for neighbours' sites demarcations.
Five 14-day notices were put up in the area where a tavern was found to have placed a container and a garage illegally on a sidewalk among others.
Metro police will return to the area in October to check on compliance with the notice, Kgasago said.
