Ekurhuleni - Sangoma issues

Issue long time going. Any advice would be appreciated.

My sister in law lives in a residential area in Kempton Park. A few years ago lady, a practicing Sangoma, moved in behind her.

Start of problems.
Animals are killed on the premises and hides flung over the roof (blueflies etc, health hazard)
Rondavel built within the 2m building servitude for practicing, grass roof. No building plans, no permission sought.
Herbs are burnt in rondavel, smoke blowing over the wall. Niece has suffered attacks from the herbs.
This residential property is used for religious services. This can go on for days with the beating of drums etc. (zoning issues)

Once again, since Friday, a service has been ongoing. Nobody in the neighborhood is getting any sleep. Many complaints to the SAPS and Ekurhuleni are fruitless. It's their contention that this is the ladies religious and constitutional rights. Obviously there is the other side, you cannot make others' rights subservient to your own.

Short of paying a fortune for a court case, any advice? I know what I would have done, but I'd likely end up in big trouble. Good contacts would be appreciated.
 
Burn down the shack. The house aswell if they don't listen.

(especially where the rondavel was built against the wall, that and all, quite close to the paved area on the opposite side where braai's are made) :whistle:

But that will not help her, woman alone.
 
I've advised her to get a case nr at both the Metro (record why the don't) want to do anything, ditto the SAPS. Then turn this into a political issue by contacting her ward councilor. Any better advice would be appreciated.

No. That has been brought to Ekurhuleni's attention many times. Zero action.

That is wrong.

Firstly, operating as a sangoma is not a religious practice but a medicinal one. That means she is operating a business on that property. For that she has to obtain municipal permission and the property must be rezoned for business purposes.

Secondly, the cultural aspect is also invalid as she has to obtain permission EVERY time she wants to slaughter an animal to perform a "customary ritual".

Go straight to the ward councillor and have them sort it out.

I agree with you on all points - the logical and sane approach. It's also exactly what I have advised in the past and now again. I was hoping there is something I may have missed.

In the past the slaughtering of animals, zoning issues etc have been brought to the attention of the municipality. Their inaction has been brilliant. I suspect they are a bit scared?

I think the words are used interchangeably and Sangomas are for business in most practices. Still you wouldn't want your neighbour starting a church without following regulations.

Yes sangomas mostly are for business but unless you know for sure he/she offers medical advice you can't claim so. They're not necessarily used interchangeably. A sangoma can be both a nyanga and a sangoma in which case you CAN use substitute one word for another (not always the case), but you cannot call a plain medicinal healer a sangoma. I know I'm nit picking but...

Regardless... he/she is operating a business from an unlicensed premises.

The blissful ignorance of the Afrikaans lyrics (bokkie ek is lief vir jou kom sokkie) and the primitive acts are stark contrasts which I think are very funny.

Borrow a snake and let them see you handling it. A week later, put up a sign: "Have you seen my snake? It was lost on "12/5/2016" last seen in my back garden."
