Johannesburg - Ekurhuleni Metro Police chief Bafana Mahlabe has resigned from his post with immediate effect, the City announced on Wednesday.

Mahlabe handed in his resignation letter to acting city manager Imogen Mashazi on Tuesday.

His resignation comes after a court application from the Democratic Alliance, calling for an investigation into his fitness to hold office.

In his resignation letter, Mahlabe said he wished to pursue business interests, Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina said.

"Although this development was unexpected, after carefully considering the matter and consultation with relevant stakeholders, I have accepted the resignation of the Chief of Police because it is my view that you must always avoid standing in someone’s way if they wish to pursue other ambitions," Masina said.

He said Mahlabe’s "bumper-to-bumper" approach to his job had an immediate impact in the fight against crime.

"As a City, we commit to continue building on the foundation that Mr Mahlabe and his predecessors have left over the years."

The deputy chief of police in charge of logistics, General Isaac Mapiyeye, would replace Mahlabe as acting chief of police for the next three months.

Mapiyeye has 31 years’ experience in policing.

Let this man be an example to Zuma. At least he knows how to step down with his reputation intact.

Resigning does not wipe all the truth away, you must still be held accountable for your wrong doings.
Pay back the money and go to jail.

I am confident that whoever fills his shoes will be able to bring more of the same in the true ANC tradition.
