East London - (South Africa's thrid largest City) has been hit by rolling blackouts, today the central district and suburbs were hit from 5pm until just before ten PM - ELIAC reports that now power is back to those areas, but reports are coming in of Sentech and SABC being of line

I'm going to have to query that one.

largest 'township ' in Southern Africa is SOWETO next is Mdantsane - East London - population 3 million, Buffalo City (greater EL area) 6 - 7 million

Tell me about it. :(

How can a City second only to SOWETO be smaller to PE - which has a total area of only 14KM - compared to Buffalo City which has an area of over 70KM ???

Largest city in SA is JNB followed by Durban then Cape Town.

EDIT - when is the next census? 2011?

But that's according to population. According to size it follows a similar pattern though - JHB, DBN, CPT, Ekurhuleni (although some would see Ekurhuleni as part of JHB, which technically it is)

Either way, there is no way that EL is the third largest in the country

If you were to arrive in East London and just travel north (forget South) look left for 65KM until you get to KingWilliamstown - you would have been looking at the outskirts of Mdantsane - it then goes into Zweitsha, also a big area - and that is leaving out a lot of other places - maybe some people would like to talk about the power cuts

Are they a new experience for East Londoners?

Since when in "East Rand" a city? There are a number of individual cities in the area.

Unexplained black-out hits EL

THOUSANDS of East London residents were without power for some four hours last night in an outage which also affected television and radio transmissions.

Even Frere Hospital was plunged into darkness. However, city officials were unable to provide any information on what happened.

NURSES at Frere Hospital's Intensive Care Unit spent four hours last Friday pumping oxygen into patients mouths manually to keep them alive after the hospital's generators failed during a power cut.

She said mothers screamed for their babies and pregnant women begged staff to stay with them.

" They begged us not to let their babies die "

East London Hospital Complex chief executive officer, Luvuyo Mosana, said water had leaked into the diesel that fuelled the generators.

Slummies aint third largest, geroverit and get out more :D
;)
j/k
We have had power cuts up here this week, sometimes twice a day.

Given Mdantsane (like Soweto) is not classified as a city in its own right, then a call of EL as the 3rd largest city is indeed very viable

Lol @ biggest city claim :D

The outages have indeed been annoying and my area seems to be affected quite often. My brother's girlfriend said she had seen a substation on fire in their area on Friday(Greenfields I think), but it might not be related
