Elandsfontein train crash leaves one dead

JOHANNESBURG - One person has died and more than 50 people have been injured after two trains collided at Elandsfontein on Thursday morning.

The crash has left thousands of commuters between Tembisa, Germiston and Pretoria stranded.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the injured commuters are being transported to various hospitals in the area.

Metrorail said the collision between trains T0601 and 1817 has resulted in overhead power on all four lines from Germiston to Kempton Park being affected.

“Trains running in the affected sections will remain stationery until the technical team on the ground declares an alternative line that is safe for train movement,” said Metrorail.

Metrorail has announced alternative plans for commuters.

Trains from Pretoria en route to Johannesburg will turn at Kempton Park with buses being used between Kempton Park and Germiston.

Metrorail blames cable theft for Joburg’s train crash

A man has died and about 50 people got injured in the accident, which saw a number of carriages leaning to the side.

Metrorail has blamed signalling cable theft after two passenger trains collided in Elandsfontein, east of Johannesburg, on Thursday morning, leaving one person dead and scores injured.


Paramedic services ER24 said a man had died and about 50 people injured in the accident, which saw a number of carriages leaning to the side.

Metrorail confirmed that a side train collision between the two trains, T0601 and 1817, had occurred at Elandsfontein at about 6.25am. Train T0601 was from Pretoria enroute to Johannesburg and T1817 was an empty train enroute to Leralla from the yard.

Gauteng Metrorail acting provincial manager Goodman Matampi said that at the time of the accident, the trains were being manually authorised between Olifantsfontein and Elandsfontein due to theft of signalling power cables that occurred in the early hours of Thursday.

Matampi said overhead power on all four lines was off from Germiston to Kempton Park. As a result, trains that were supposed to run in the affected sections would remain stationery until the technical team on the ground declared a safe alternative line.

Elandsfontein train crash due to multiple Metrorail violations

The Railway Safety Regulator says the train control officer on duty allowed two trains into the same section and has accused Metrorail personnel of failing to observe and implement proper protocol.
