So my dad is starting to show signs of old age and is nearing 70 but he is still fit and working! He doesn't have a pension due to a few misfortunes dealt out to him through his life. I want to put him on the waiting list for a decent retirement center because their waiting lists can be quite hectic. Does anybody have tips on this and an idea on costs? Since I would like to start making financial provisions now so that in 5 or so years I can afford this.

From my experience the prices vary dramatically - e.g. between R2,500 and R15,000 per month - as do the terms & conditions.

The best is to visit each centre to actually see what you get for your money: tedious but safer. For example: some centres don't have frail care units. Ditto meals etc.

And best start soon: a five-year waiting list is pretty average for a reasonable retirement home.

Don't forget to take into account what your dad wants. If he hates the place it won't be good for him.

Make sure to check the admittance age for some of the homes, some homes dont take people over a certain age, so while he may be eligible now in a few years time he may not be.

Sadly my dad has had a few financial issues go against him too and will have to work for as many years as possible. I've heard working later helps keep you in shape though so hopefully it will with him.

I think there are some very well organized and furnished homes are available for elders at some reasonable prices. Which could be bought at once and no after payments. Homes are provided with all necessary and luxuries facilities required to live comfortably. Also provided with 24/7 nursing facility according to their needs and full privacy.

It may be that working longer and learning new things helps sustain the brain.

and full privacy.
Unlikely unless they're wholly owned free-standing houses, not part of a development or complex. i.e. no housing association, managing agents, body corporate or anything similar.

Costs and waiting lists vary enormously from town to town and home to home.

I know of one home in Pretoria that has vacancies and costs arround R5000 per month.

It would help if you sttae where you are looking.
