Elderly nun robbed, raped, strangled in Ixopo

Nun was left to die, court hears

Pietermaritzburg - One of the two men who pleaded guilty to the murder and rape of an 86-year-old nun admitted that he left her to die on her bed after he had raped her.

In his statement that was read to the High Court in Pietermaritzburg, Sbongiseni Phungula, 25, said that after he had raped Sister Gertrud Tiefenbacher, he left the room, but she was "still moving".

Phungula, along with 26-year-old Mondli Michael Shozi, earlier pleaded guilty to charges of murder, rape and theft.

Sister Tiefenbacher, who was Austrian born, was found dead on the floor next to her bed in her room at the Sacred Heart Convent in Ixopo on April 19.

Accused didn’t mean to rape and kill nun, court hears

The two Ixopo men who have admitted to the rape and murder of 86-year-old nun, Sister Gertrud Tiefenbacher, had gone into her room with the intention to steal food and not to attack her, the Pietermaritzburg High Court heard on Wednesday.

“They only attacked her after she had come into the room while they were inside. The real intention was to steal food and the rest of the crimes were an afterthought,” the accused’s lawyer, Advocate Zina Anastasiou, said.

Presenting the defence’s argument before Judge Nompumelelo Hadebe, Anastasiou disputed the State’s version that the accused had intended to kill the nun. “They merely placed a towel on the deceased’s face – it had not be proved beyond reasonable doubt that the cause of death was strangulation,” she said.

Well that's just the fscking problem, isn't it? Hang them. Shoot them. Obliterate them with AAA guns. I don't care.

She slept in the pantry?

Ya more like,

"Eish, Sbo. I'm hungry, ne?"

"Ya, lets steal some food there by the nuns place."

"Oh look, it's a nun. Lets rape, strangle and then medda!"

"Well that was fun, but what about the food?"

"Eish, my hunga, she's been satisfied."

Nuns: Murderers don't know how much we pray for them

Pietermaritzburg - Sbongiseni Phungula, 25, and Mondli Michael Shozi, 26, on Wednesday were found guilty of the rape, robbery and murder of Roman Catholic nun Gertrud Tiefenbacher at an Ixopo convent.

Meanwhile, outside court, Sister Gerald Frye from the convent, said she hoped that in the service of justice, Jesus would touch the hearts of Phungula and Shozi.

“We want the Lord to touch them and they are the recipients of a lot of praying from all corners. We will keep them in our prayers,” she said.

At sentencing, a victim impact statement taken from other nuns at the convent is expected to be read into the record.

The two, who were arrested in a police raid in the wake of Tiefenbacher’s slaying at the Sacred Heart Convent in Ixopo on April 19, appeared in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday.

Oh, they're the victims. Confused I was, thought it was the gang raped, murdered nun. Might as well give another suspended sentence, and free housing perhaps?

I found it odd that they posted this story about the convicted pair's past. It doesn't excuse their actions.
