A man arrested after the killing of an Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, girl will be released because of a lack of evidence, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.
"Police discovered there's nothing linking the man to the murder, but they are still conducting investigations," Captain Nomvula Mbense said.
The 33-year-old was arrested on Monday after residents, who suspected him of involvement in the crime, handed him to police. She said the man would be released within the next 48 hours to ensure his safety, as residents were angry about the murder.
The 18-year-old woman, named in The Star as Sandy Maharla, was reported missing on Saturday. She failed to return from drawing money for her parents on Friday. Her body was found in a field on Sunday.
An inquest docket had been opened, but the results of the post mortem would determine whether a case of murder would be investigated.
"A post mortem was performed and the results will be taken to forensics to conduct investigations," Mbense said.
The Star reported on Tuesday that Maharla's killing could be a revenge attack for the murder of Micaela Manneson in February.
"The police are investigating and I don't want to disturb the investigation by commenting on that," Mbense said.
