Hi, been having problems with latency on my ADSL connection (10mbps) on Local and International traffic.

It doesn't matter which ISP I use I still get the same problem.(Afrihost, Telkom, @lantic, Axxess)

The latency problems occur from approx 9am to 12pm, than its ok until approx 3pm.(weekends)

On weekdays I have only been able to verify that I have high latency from 5pm

I play games like Dota 2, Starcraft 2 and some Battlefield 4, all are on local servers (expect SC2) and I constantly struggle with 340ms - 700ms, mostly its in the 650ms range.

I don't seem to have a bandwidth problem, I can stream youtube, skype and anything else perfectly, but reaction times (when I click a link) is extremely long. (It takes approx 7-10 seconds for the browser to react to a link click)

I need some help with this please, where do I start? I have already tried swapping routers, changing ISP, checking if anything is downloading, nothing helps.

I live in Eldorainge X18, my friend lives near Mall @ Red with the same result, also, the high latency happens exactly at the same time for the both of us. (We skype when we play Dota 2)

Thanks.

Hi There.

I am in the same area more or less, I am also experiencing the same latency issues, lately it has been getting worse.
Switching ISP / Hardware doesn't fix this. My ISP (AFRIHOST) is also pulling up their shoulders and struggling.

My landline number is 012 653 xxxx , so I am connecting the Henopspark Exchange.

Downloads are fine, its just the pings that suck, making realtime and gaming services useless, more than 500ms on the 1st hop.

This is probably due to the Telkom speed upgrades.

Same thing happened last time when they upgrade 512 to 1mb.

Problem is that the exchange is over saturated, not much you can do about that.

Last time it took 5 months(in Wierdapark) for the pings to come down to normal.

Having the exact same issue and would like to get the feedback from TelkomZA, According to them there is no congestion:

I'm on 012656xxxx also near mall@reds, I've had a couple latency issues, but more intermittent than predictable. By large, I'm quite pleased with my connection.

Have you done traceroutes to check which hops are the problem ones?

The issue is directly on the 1st hop, regardless of which ISP I use, but this is also just after hours, during "game time"
right now it is 12ms to the 1st hop. Too bad I am not there to use it :)

No I havent, but will asap after work. Totally forgot to do that check.

As Splendid has stated, Telkom says there is no congestion, which should be true since most 10mbps exchanges have fiber/metro ethernet back-haul.

Edit: My extension is 012 653 xxxx, which is the HENNOPSPARK (THNP) exchange.
