Electric bakkies are coming

Electric vehicles – specifically, the Tesla Model 3 – are dominating the U.S. market for premium sedans, but are barely even on the radar in the busiest automotive category, which includes SUVs and pickup trucks.

The immediate reason is economics, but it has a lot to do with physics as well: Larger, heavier, less aerodynamic electric vehicles need larger, heavier, more expensive batteries to power them. Our research has looked at the energy needed to move cars and trucks along the road, and has identified the important factors that affect power usage.
 
lol good luck getting eskom to support a whole new technology, charging your electric car will end up costing more than petrol
 
Will be some time before they'll be good enough to go to church on a Sunday and take the pigs to market on a Monday.

Seems to be a thing that if the manufacturer says the range is 400km its probably more like 250 then it'll take a whole night to charge as well, but carry on, we need more electric vehicles.

That is more the numbers that matter (even without the overloading)...

They need to state the range when it is fully loaded...

That as well, but you know what I'm on about, needs to be comfortable and fast as well as tough and practical. Remember how the good old Hilux was back in the day? Practical but God awful to drive, especially when they had a massive lift kit and offroad tires.

And you just couldn’t get enough momentum to overtake a Hiace up a hill because they had the exact same drivetrain. :)

Noooo, if you did you'd have to start praying that you can keep it straight because the slightest weave would tip it over right fast.
 
The issue for me with EVs in general is similar to those old Toyota bakkies - they were good at what they were built for, but you needed a second vehicle. Nowadays bakkies are good enough to be the only vehicle. But EVs aren’t yet. For a two or three car family, having an EV in the fleet makes a huge amount of sense. But if you’ve only got one car, then an EV means making all sorts of compromises.

How’s this for a plan: you get a system where your house runs off your car. You leave just enough juice in the car to get to work; where you plug it in to charge while you’re drinking coffee and chatting to the secretary. At four-thirty you go home and run your house off the car again. Goodbye Eskom, no more electricity bills, and no-one is climbing on your roof to steal your solar panels because you don’t need them.
