Electric Razor

Personally I prefer the foil-head razors rather than the rotary-head razors.

I also prefer the foil type razors (although the Philips rotary razors are very good too). I've used a Braun 8985 for about 5 or 6 years now - it has a charging cradle that also automatically cleans the razor. Consumables: R150 for 2 cleaning solution cartridges (last around 4 weeks each) and about once a year I get a new foil and cutter set which costs around R350.

Braun's local distributor is piss poor though in comparison to Philips and sometimes it can be a struggle to get consumables/parts. Dischem has been pretty good lately though.

The charging type. What to buy and where? (Preferably in the Boksburg area)

heya i also stay in Boksburg :)

try dischem at the galleria or the one by hificorp.

clicks also sell.

personally they irritate my skin way more and i get plenty ingrowns.

still need to try one of these.

w/ Braun getting replacements is expensive. New World in Menlyn has them, else you'll need to buy online.

I'd recommend the kind that is water proof. Makes it easier to clean.

Like this one:

One thing I don't like about them is that the battery ones don't have the power of the old Braun shavers (the ones you plug straight into a 240V socket).

The best thing to do is.....

..... read a few reviews on the web to see which razor you want, then see if you can find it locally. Chances are you wont. Then buy it through a portal like have2have.co.za

When I was looking at electric razors last year, all the models I was interested in were not available in any of our stores. In fact the Braun series available in SA is several versions/models older than what is available in the USA for example.

still don't get the hype.

Tried both types (both lying at home in a box somewhere now).

My Mach 3 Phenom (or whatever it's called) shaves 10x better and in the long run costs about the same.

Hmm how did you deduce the cost is the same?

Braun = R550 (what I paid about 4 years ago) and have replaced the foil once @ R130 I think.

Mach 3 blades = god knows what they are now, but I think they were R60 for 3 back then.

Thats a R2880 for 4 years worth of blades assuming you use 3 a month.

I got a Phillips Phillishave about 4/5 years ago and it still works great. I'm still using the original 'blades' (titanium) as well. Love it.

The foil type is best.

Get one that you can either charge or use from the mains.

Philips are far too weak and ineffective.

The more you pay, the better it will be.

The Braun batteries are NOT replaceable, no matter whether it seems so or not.

A 4pack lasts me around 12 to 18 months... (5 blades last a very long time on a razor).

I have a Braun foil shaver, Cost me around R500 and I used it for around 2 months before the foil started getting it's first little hole that pulls hair out instead of shaving it off. Possibly just luck of the draw but besides that it does not shave nearly as smoothly.

Sheesh 4 blades for over a year?? You must have pretty fine hair. I could never use a blade for that long.

Razer will without a doubt give a closer shave that lasts longer. My skin unfortunately doesn't tolerate a blade very well, so the foil out of the shaver range, gives me the closest shave.

sheesh 4 blades a year

i grow an apache and still on my mach i used about 4 blades in 2-3 months.

i am currently using those cheapie 2 bladed razors to try avoid irritation, imo it seems better, i still have my other and new blades but thinking i should stick on the 2 bladed

yep, 4 blades a year and no issues.

People tend to seriously overdo blade replacement (used to as well till my dad told me I am doing it wrong).

I don't use shaving cream and that may also be why my blades last so long, the stuff gunks blades up like crazy and glycerine soap works about 10X better.
