Hi everyone

i managed to get my eye on this one tonight :

VOMO Scooter

looks really awesome - although a bit pricey at about R10k (not sure what SARS will charge to clear it though..)

very very tempted to bite the bullet though. does anyone know what is the performance of comparable local models?

regards

For what though? Fun?

since the range on the bigger model is about 32km , a 8km trip to work is completely possible i think. even at 16km per day, the battery should only drop to 70% in 2 years of usage.

only issue i can think is tires and the frame.

You obviously cant ride that on the road, so will riding on the pavement be possible, with people walking and ramps and so fourth.

I've tried a bunch of them in Shanghai. They go pretty fast - 30/40km /hr.
Newer models use Lithium batteries, older ones Lead Acid.

In Shanghai, they go for about 2500rmb or so (marginally over R5000) + duties + taxes if brought here.

Fun, but likely dangerous given how people drive here.

Sidewalks are going to be hell at intersections. Unless it has some sort of turbo boost

edit: or this

The pavements where you live must be in much better condition than most I've seen in this country if you're even considering doing 30-40km/h on those tiny wheels. I don't see it ending well.

think the turbo boost option is the best - should clear most of the rough parts on the pavements . not sure how long the batteries will last then.

but yes - the wheel size vs the roughness of the road is the deciding factor. the frame etc wont hold up on a daily abuse. We just dont have the public transport setup to make this feasible.

it is however very small and portable, so could still be useful for the odd gautrain trip? eg will make the 2km walk to the gautrain much easier.

And then there's the laughter. How will he put up with all that laughter when he arrives at work, scooting past the water cooler at 30km/h? :)

well he will be laughing all the way to the bank with a monthly fuel bill of zero rands.

*ignoring the small fact that you still pay to charge it (can always charge it at work:p)
**also ignoring the problem of not being able to charge it during load shedding

Electric Bicycle seems like a more sensible option to me.

Or for that kind of money might as well buy a cheap chinese proper Scooter...as in motorcycle.

have to agree - lots of growth happened there in the last year or two. can probably buy upgrade kits (or import them).

but still. the Scootah looks so cool. especially going past the water bottle in the office at 40km/h :D

I would not use such a scooter for anything but fun because it will be near impossible to ride it on side walks. On average I ride to work 4/5 days in the week, I ride a XL sized 29er mountain bike with suspension fork and even then it is still difficult to predict what mindless pedestrians are going to do and to jump side walks that do not have onramps.

When riding on the road with cars you quickly notice how bumpy the bit around the yellow line it, this makes it difficult when you have to slow down and signal your turn. I would not want to try that on a scooter like that with such tiny wheels.

Why import. . . .
For the same price you can get something very similar called the Cruza go board. . .looks better too.
Or you can get something called the Uber scooter. . .it's got large off road wheels and it's 1600wat. . .it's a lead acid battery though, but it last up to an hour, and you got a power save mode so can squeeze out an extra half hour. . .plus it's freaken fast. . .and because it's lead battery it'll be cheaper to buy a spare. . . .

Go to http://www.sascootershop.co.za/categories-electric-scooters.php and have a look at those two models. . .Both are 10k.

I might get something like this if I ever had a yacht or a Cessna but daily use= dubious. Most landing strips and plenty jetties are reached by dirt roads outside of town so I'd venture for the bigger wheels regardless. Or just a fold-up bike?

Problem with electric scooter, is people wont get out your way it'd be so quiet they can't hear you coming

Quite dangerous, if you've nearly been run over by one of these things before

When you ride a silent bike it is your responsibility to maneuver around mindless pedestrians that walk three abreast hogging the entire sidewalk. It comes with the territory - take it or leave if.

You know, as much as some motorist hate cyclist (with valid reasons in some cases) that is how much I hate pedestrians. They are mindless and unpredictable and slow. Yet the rules of the road state we must yield to them so it's the law.
