I'm not talking about zippy nippy's or the like but proper scooters with electric motors and batteries.

Why dont we have them in SA? Or do we and i'm unaware? Can we import them, easily cheaply? Look at this link:

I could ride that to work everyday and charge it at work if need be. I would surely invest in a green scooter, but they seem to be available everywhere but in SA, i'm sure this could be the answer to our soon to be R16/l petrol price!

30mph = 48.28kmh

no thanks.

If you want to survive on a scooter, you'll need to do 100km/h as well.

Otherwise ppl will push you off the road.

It only goes 30mph though:(

48km/h why would you wanna go any faster than that on a scooter? You'd crack your skull open if you fall  Its just to work and back in town. 50cc scooters aren't faster than that and remember full torque at 0rpm so you should get to 48km/h very fast!

But ignore the top speed for now. Is this type of thing available in SA?

Yeah i wonder why electric motors struggle up hills if they have all that torque from 0rpm? Maybe it goes slower to preserve power

Is "work" not some function of "torque"?
So, torque produces "work". And since it takes more "work" to move uphill than downhill, the torque results in less "speed".

A company called Adequate Energy wanted to scooters in to the county a few years ago, but it was illegal to drive these on our roads. Not sure if anything has changed since then.

I have a 125cc scooter I use to travel around when I dont need a car. Saves lots and lots of money. My petrol expenses have being reduced to around R60 a month (assuming I dont travel out of town).

As much as I would like a cheaper and greener to run scooter, I think that one is going to come with a price tag of R10k + and my scooter was under 4k. Will I save 6k in petrol before I get another scooter?

Probably only illegal cuz no one was prepared to work late to draw up some legislation  Lazy f@cks! I mean come on! Bicycles are allowed on the road? Old rusted falling apart smoking datsuns are allowed even donkey-karre

What about 50cc scooters? Are they worth it? Are they even more fuel efficient? 2 slow? I'm just under 60kilos so i'm sure it can handle me, although should step on a scale i've been a couch potato 4 a while now

Doing 90-110km an hour on a freeway is bad enough.. I wouldnt go lower than 125... 50cc`s struggle to get up the hill. Also take into account your weight extra. You can pick up a brand new 110cc Vuka for R4999 or there abouts. You really dont want anything weaker than that.

We have had scooters in the country for many many years now and I doubt companies would invest in distributing them locally if it was illegal. I think you are referring to is scooters and all bikes under 125cc for that matter bring illegal on freeways, not necessarily all roads. That is still the case AFAIK.

Do you need a motorbike license to ride a scooter?
