I am looking to buy an electric shaver and have noticed that local websites charge less for shavers from the USA.

Has anyone purchased one of these electric shavers online?

I am looking at the Panasonic ES8109S511.

Take2
Ordered from USA = R 1,725 - R 1,913
Ordered from UK = R 3,152

Wow, that's a lot of cash for a razor. Have you considered something in the Philishave range? Most of them are between R500 - R1500 at Clicks.

My research is...

1) A normal blade razor (handle) cost R150 then 4-5 blades cost R160. Keep the handle for a year and blades for a year is R160 x 11 = R1760 (R160 + R1920). If you stretch the blades it could be R 2000 for 2 years.

2) Online consumer based reviews have the Panasonic as the number one Wet/Dry shaver (Braun is the best dry shaver).

Would you waste R500 on an electric razor?

I have a Panasonic Wet/Dry
I works quite well and I find the 'wet feature' quite convenient to clean the razor
I mus admit I haven't used it with shaving cream quite that often but I am very pleased. It works better than the standard 3 head Phillishaves I've used before.
I paid R600 for mine at Game, but I dont know if it is the same model (and I'm too lazy to check now :P)

Philips teamed up with Norelco , and Braun now use Gillette foils/cutter heads.

I have the Braun Pulsonic and it shaves really well - been using Braun for a good few years now, and this latest model is streets ahead of my previous ones.

On the topic of Braun - where can I find some spare parts for them? Had a look at Clicks (where I bought it) but nothing.

My one's foil torn.

@FRANKIE
Where did you buy your Braun Pulsonic?
I got mine at the local super market in the US (Meijers) - If it wasn't that I was submitting the bill to the airline that lost my baggage, I'd have shopped online for it.
Not sure where's the best place in SA to get it - you could always buy it from a US online shop.
I'm sure I've seen them and the replacement heads at the new super pharmacy chain in SA - just cant think of their name right now.

I had a Braun Synchro which had a major upgrade when they started supplying replacement cutter heads made by Gillette - the old foil had a uniform hole pattern, whereas the new Gillette foil had a type of random daisy pattern.

Clicks will order it for you, but last time in SA I searched for the SA agent online and they shipped a replacement - I recall the price was the same as what I paid in the UK.

Does it require an power reducer to plug into SA wall plug? Or are these shavers universal?
The power supply is 100 ~ 240 V , so no power adapter needed - it has the two flat pin connections, so all you need is that small flat to round pin device.

Thanks for all the info.

I eventually bought:
Panasonic ES8249K Arc IV Nano Vortex Wet/Dry Rechargeable Shaving System

for R 2,838.00 from Wantitall.co.za

Great service from a company that is normally viewed as a rip-off.

This has been the best shaving experience I have EVER had. I received the shaver Oct 2009.

Thread resurrection!!

I have a Braun 5770 electric and was considering replacing it with a Phillips, either the HQ7360 or the HQ8250, a big price difference between them, almost double and im actually not sure why.

Happy to pay the extra for a better model, but whats better about it is what I am wondering.

Anyway what are your thoughts on the Phillips 3 head razor against the Braun foil and block style? I find myself going over and over and over areas of my face trying to shave and its a mission with the Braun.

I also can't find spares for the Braun, no where sells them, wtf??

Are parts easily available for the Phillips shavers?

I cannot even use the normal razor blades since going electric.

I always end up going back to blades after using electric for a while. Its never as clean cut on the blades and its pretty uncomfortable sometimes.

I have been using an electric for about 2 years now, tried to go back to blades but they give me the worst shaving rash in the world, that was the whole reason to go to an electric.

Just got hold of Braun and they want R389 just for a new cutting block and foil.

Seems a bit crazy.

I have a ~R2,000 Philips electric razor. It was the top of the line one when I got it a few years ago. It's crap, I've used it twice in the last 18 months. It leaves me with horribly sensitive skin, especially on the neck. It does a pretty good job on the face, but it doesn't give anything close to a clean shave on my neck.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Perhaps it works well if you have very light hair growth. Like a girl.

Interesting. I have very thick stubble and my Braun does give a pretty close shave, obviously not like a razor but pretty darn close.

Do you know if you have to replace the head or any other parts after a period of time?
