Hi guys,

I have a 1998 BMW 328i (E36), and the drivers side window mechanism is acting up badly. I went to BMW, and they said that it needs to be replaced, but as with anything from BMW, the costs are insane (something like 3.5k). Now, I am looking to buy the mechanism, but I have no idea where else to look.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks in advance...

Nope before you do that try this, my cousins 325i did the same, he switched the rear buttons to the front and yipeee the front worked...so try that and see if its the case, many times that push button just needs replacing which is cheaper than the entire unit...you can also get this at any scrapyard...try rear ones, as they get used alot less than front ones...

Good luck

hey Alfa,

yeah, been phoning around some scrap yards, and seem to have some half-promising leads...

on the suggestion of swapping the buttons, I can guarantee that it has nothing to do with them. The window itself works, but makes such terrible noises while it is doing so that each time i think it is gonna stop working. Also been to BMW, and asked them, and they say that the motor is fine, and it is just the mechanism that is buggered. Apparently, some of the gears are broken, and so on...

there is a place in Kenilworth CT, I think it's called BRUCE'S BMW, where I got my 1996 316i E36 drivers window mechanism replaced with a new one, far cheaper than BMW in fact it was so cheap I bought 4 new window switches as well :)

if u like I can get the number for u maybe they will send u one??

Stepfather had a Passat with electric windows. Driver's side packed up. He tootled off to the scrapyard, and got the mechanical window winder, chucked the electric mechanism out and put the mechanical winder in.

Doubtful if BMW makes mechanical units instead of electrical units.

First port of call should be a scrapyard, second port of call a reputable spares shop. Compare the prices of these two before you buy, if the scrapyard unit is 20% or less than the reputable spare shop, rather buy from the reputable shop then.

But it's your call.

There's a spot in Main Road (extension of Ontdekkers) somewhere in Triomf called House of B - as soon as I get the phone number from my Dad (they're not listed in the yellowpages as far as I can see) I'll update the post...

EDIT

Got the number, but it's for a cell, so a PM might be a little more considerate in this case... on its way.
