Elite Dangerous

Hi Guys

Anyone play this on pc?

Is it any good?

Makes me think of freelancer.

Been a backer since beta.

Your good and my good could be different.
But here's what gets me to come back once in a while:-
1. The Audio of ships and weapons is just super good, audio makes me happy when doing things.
2. Can be real fun with a mate.

But I honestly don't consider it a good game due to the heavy grind factor, no single offline mode(Which shafted me).
Since they added power play it seems like there is more to do other than Bounty hunting, mining, Trading, mercenary work. However the power play really is ***, literally have to grind everyday to maintain any worth while points.

Also look at Star Citizen if you want freelancer(But i know its not out yet). - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

Elite dangerous is my "Feel like shooting people in space game". It's not a game I can recommend to everyone TBH, some like it, some hate it.

Had my eye on Elite Dangerous for a while now, I played Elite Frontier way back but people's comments had me wondering whether it's worth the money.

Massive grind, terribly annoyingly slow hyperdrive mechanic makes traveling painful.

The game is about a mile long, but an inch deep in terms of content/depth. You can spend 100hrs doing the same stuff, over and over.

Bounty hunting can be quite fun, but this also get a bit boring. Skill factor isnt very high.

Each expansion will cost a full new game.

So it may be fun for a short while, bit of a learning curve but if you are like me who enjoys real simulators like DCS world, it takes about 5 minutes to figure out what is going on, so not terribly complicated.

They do have a nice UI though which makes selecting missions, targeting modules on enemy ships, activating your own etc quite nice.

I bought the game on special for R200, for that price its worth it. I would never pay the full price for what they are offering, just not worth it.

Im a space sim fan, played Elite Frontier and all the X games which is very much like Elite so I think I have a fairly level perspective.

That said, im also a backer of Star Citizen, which imo is going to kick ED out of the arena on release. Yes there are some people claiming it wont happen, but those people havent backed or played the latest release. Those same people push ED as the best game ever made. Beware.

My pc crashed a few years ago see its on Xbox One not sure if it will be any better than the pc version :-$

If star citizen is as big as they say its going to be and its not all hype it will be one awesome game. Still no eta though which sucks.

Thanx guys for the responses think I will give it a skip.

Darkstar One was also not a bad space sim.

You forgot to mention the highly annoying bugs that have been there since Alpha/beta:-

Hyperdrive and superdrive bug where you just chill there in a vibrating ui and repeat audio for a minute or more.
Asteroids that can be shot through by the AI.
Space ports where you magically dock then find yourself clipping through the Space port.
Issues with trying to be in the same instance as a friend.

Just a little something i wanted to add as well. I seriously hated this game during the Eskom issue as they have a combat logging system, where if you log off they can still kill you for about 2 minutes.

You are very correct Star citizen is going to teminate ED's players base.

I really like the look and feel of the ships. Just a pity they never bothered to make a game to go with it.

I decided toward the end of last year that Elite Dangerous was the biggest waste of money I've ever incurred on Steam.

I also got it because I was hoping for something like Freelancer, but no - it has some cool bits and pieces - but I found it impossible to have fun with. I spent a good 50 hours trying to have fun, and I don't think I had more than 2 minutes worth (for around R600.00 :wtf:).

But that's just me.

Isn't No Man's sky almost exactly the same except with just more planets?

No.

Don't get me wrong, that might not be a game either, we'll have to wait and see. But so far it seems to have a lot more procedurally generated content, e.g. planets, creatures etc.

We'll just have to see if the exploration etc is any fun.

Hello Games developers have described the various play-styles one can enjoy, from being an intergalactic merchant, to a freighter-raiding space pirate, to a sci-fi Charles Darwin. Obviously, you are free to do as you please; just remember that many systems and planets will be guarded by organized authorities.

Seems allot like elite dangerous.

I got this game purely because I have a rift...and in the rift...it blows your F******G MIND.

I was really tempted to get this during the Steam Christmas sale, but kept thinking back to my days past of the X series.
You could make that as action packed as you like, and I still ended up getting bored because there is still only so much you can do, before repetition hits it hard.

It's why I also have little faith in No Mans Sky. The huge universe is great, but how long before flying between planets becomes more tedious than fun? Or naming a planet? Or finding TRULY unique species? Etc.

I think I'm possibly getting a tad to cynical in my old age....

Yep i agree, was also looking at this, but looks like you need lots of time and there is about 1% of action and 99% mundane things in there. Also agree on No Mans Sky, i really do not get it, looks like Spore mixed with some Minecraft elements... just don't see it holding my attention for long, so will skip.

It really depends what you do with the game. I think doing trading can be quite boring over long term. Even exploration might not be as interesting.

Its a space simulator, and with that definition is quite a good one. Yes you will need alot of time.
Its also not a finished game, as they will by updating it till 2023, and recently they added the expansion which allows planetary landings. The base game also got updated recently with some content and nice new extremely expensive ships.

I have played 900+ hours, most of which is combat related. So i think i got my money's worth I guess.

Its also a great game that you can play while Star Citizen is busy updating.

The graphics and sound is insanely good.
The sound especially. You can hear what gravity sounds like in this game.
The physics is kinda weird, feels like you are underwater, but i like it.
They dont allow you to look outside of your ship because that will break immersion, but you can use the debug camera if you want to look.

The mission system is a let down mostly but it is being worked on as well.
So to clarify, you can pick up missions on a bulitin board at a station, but some missions have a rank requirement, or you need ot be liked in order to do them.
But some missions is either broken, as in bugged and you cannot finish them, or they dont pay enough and is not worth your time.
The only worthwhile missions are long range smugling missions (high risk high reward) and assasination missions which are fun and chalenging mostly.

I prefer to rather do my own thing and help out a faction i like to capture new systems by doing missions for them or making it difficult for their competing factions. Sort of a role play element i guess, and it makes me feel like i have an impact in the universe.

Flying around in an asteroid field making ships detonate is where its at.

In terms of ping, you can play from SA, altough its sort of a P2P kind of network system, so it may not always work so well. Mostly it works.

I'm a backer of the game (also originally played Frontier Elite back in the day) and actually like it for the grind involved - there are no goals except for the ones you set yourself, but you can't just blow through to the top tier/ranks in a couple of hours either.

My current self set goal isn't even achievable - i want to save up several billion credits to buy the Panther(think of a flying oil tanker with tons of shields, armour and turrets)ship once it is added to the game, kit it out with the best equipment and go buy out ALL the commodities of a station

I mostly only play in the 'solo' mode (online single-player, market data is still shared with everyone) since my measly 2Mb connection sometimes struggles when other players get into the mix

It hadn't been mentioned much yet, but the Horizons expansion is great as well (though i got that for free with the lifetime pass, don't really see it being worth the full price either) - adding a lot of new planetary station types and riding around(and doing missions) in little moon buggies and discovering all sorts of stuff on planets (currently only the ones with no atmosphere)
