My eye caught this thread today....
So the other thread is a follow-on to this one, or because this one didn't get enough attention we spawn a new one.

First of all, so what if Elon got a shaft in high school. So did I.
What is the point of these articles. He is no longer a SA citizen AFAIK, so why is that relevant too...

Instead, focus on the people still living here, who do great things...
 
So. In short - he's smart, he's a geek, he is good at lateral thinking and he's a driven *******. But he's our *******. He is as much a South African as Tolkien or Orwell was. (For anyone who is interested - Mark Shuttleworth was head boy at Western Province Preparatory School)

As for his fear of AI - anyone who has ever spent some time contemplating a true intelligence without humanity's built in constraints - should be afraid of it. I'm not going to go hide in the Karoo - but after 15 years of working with your average computer systems - I'm keeping a close eye on this one.

Its as if journalists feel we are such losers we have to often say hey look that immensely successful dude came from SA...
 
Musk is reported to have turned solid engineers into catatonic wrecks after a bad meeting, and built a culture where his employees adore him and fear him at the same time. For me, it is this aspect of Vance’s portrayal is particularly fascinating.

No-one is forcing them to work there. A nice decent guy would not have been able to get so far in the aerospace or the automotive industry. Some have tried and they walked over them. Google Beal Aerospace.

One of the senior managers at Apple once slammed a door so hard after a meeting with Jobs that she broke the mechanism and they had to call a locksmith to get her out. Jobs - when informed of this - asked if they could delay the locksmit untill she emailed him her report.

EDIT - would I work for him? A few years ago it would have been a resounding yes, but I now have a wife and kids, and they take priority over anything else.
