what do you guys suggest or use for your corporate email archiving solution?

Want to move away from PST's

Exchange? And than ensuring that the store is backed up correctly. For users that have PST's, have a backup program copy it from their PC's to a server, and have the server backed up...
Personally, I would still use Exchange.

50 users running exchange with a limited 200MB storage area each.
Some of the users have 15 different PST files (each year) that are from 1GB to 8GB each.

So no can store on exchange.

I also use the PST backup, but these (l)users complain about backup time, corruption in PST. Plus that backup program and windows sync can sometimes cause duplicates (lots!!!) and it's not a viable solution.

Looks like it's a hardware solution like MiraPoint or software like MailStore.

I use mailstore for my backups - not a corp environment tho. It works really nicely.

kuk thing about MailStore is the lack of automation and you still either need a PST or you can only get a copy of your current exchange box. there should be some sort of plug-in for outlook.

MailArchiva has had a few MyBB mentions that I can see ..but none, that I saw, that confirm one can archive mail from PSTs for SMME businesses - the kind of operation where the desktops are running Office, but at POP3 clients pulling mail from their ISPs, etcetera.

I'm working through the FAQ but haven't stumbled across the nugget that confirms this question one way or another for me ..anyone got input on this one?

So I got curious, scratched around SF some and unearthed Xena
Xena is free and open source software developed by the National Archives of Australia to aid in the long term preservation of digital records. Xena is an acronym meaning Xml Electronic Normalising for Archives.

Xena is a component of the Digital Preservation Software Platform (DPSP).

Xena software aids digital preservation by performing two important tasks:
  • detecting the file formats of digital objects
  • converting digital objects into open formats for preservation.
It's installable on everything; can, apparently, peel PSTs open and, as mentioned above, is part of the DPSP, about which:
The Digital Preservation Software Platform (DPSP) is free and open source software developed by the National Archives of Australia. The DPSP is a collection of software applications which support the goal of digital preservation.

The DPSP comprises:

Xena - Xena stands for XML Electronic Normalising for Archives. Xena converts digital files to standards based, open formats.

Digital Preservation Recorder (DPR) - DPR handles bulk preservation of digital files via an automated workflow.

Checksum Checker - Checksum Checker is a piece of software that is used to monitor the contents of a digital archive for data loss or corruption.

Manifest Maker - Manifest Maker produces a tab-separated list of digital files in a specified location. The manifest includes the checksum, path and filename of each digital file.
So that looks like a stack that:
  • appears to fit the bill (but YMMV depending on what you want, what regulatory compliance to which you may have to conform)
  • has a good provenance (a gov't national archive project is NOT (can't be, surely?) toy software)
  • can bring archiving to other files and formats
  • seems to be automatable!
  • as a bonus is GPL3 and free
And the name just gets me (I'll admit, I couldn't stop the mental image of ol' Lucy...) :o
