Looking for advice / technical help. Relative to members of this forum I am barely computer literate. Many years ago my mom signed up with an IT company that supplied her with a laptop and dongle. She was also given an email address, viz. @nameofITcompany.co.za. Years later she no longer needed the dongle-supplied internet access as she used my WiFi. We cancelled the data part of our contract with the IT co. and maintained use of the email address at a reduced fee. This past weekend however, we became aware that she was no longer able to access the email server. A call to the company revealed that they had summarily decided that the @nameofITcompany.co.za was to be used only by their staff for their business. My mom’s emails were last updated mid-May. Any emails sent after that date have disappeared into a never-to-be-accessed-again abyss. Interestingly, this unilateral change did not stop said company from debiting my mother’s bank account for the now-expired use of her @nameofITcompany.co.za email address. Surely we must have some recourse? Would emails between mid-May and now, sent via their server, be retrievable? No notification of this change was provided and I discovered it coincidentally.

That’s not the point. I’ve done that for my mom already. What about 3 weeks worth of mails that could be from SARS / her bank, and who knows where else? What about the principle?

Depends on the email protocol used by the company - sometimes emails are stored on a server, sometimes they're stored locally - you'd need to speak to their tech dept. and inquire.

Sounds like a headache. If she still has the contact list it might be worth sending out an email to clients letting them know she's got a new address, and if she can tolerate losing those 3 weeks of email - just walk away and rebuild. Seems like too much hassle for 3 weeks of email, tho I realize there's probably some important stuff in there she doesn't like the idea of losing.

Sounds like you need to step back and look at the best option to approach this.

You could contact someone Senior at the host and explain the situation.
Maybe request that the email account be temporarily reinstated. So your mother could change her email account on the online services she used with it.

Just distance emotion with this.
It's not worth getting upset with them.

If they deleted the mailbox: [email protected], then the mails will be lost. If it is still there and they didn't make changes to the DNS records, the mails should be retrievable. In the end, it's best to move on and change the email address at the bank and sars asap.
