Hi we have been noticing a strange problem on email. We find that every so often, we can't retrieve our email. After investigating, we have noticed that this seems to happen when our IBurst IP address range is 41.208.xxx.xxx. We then keep reconnecting until our IP address range is 192.2.xxx.xxx. When we do that, suddenly email starts to work again.

When in the 41.208 range, I can ping certain outgoing mail servers but not our own one. We have also had a similar complaint from one other client. If users can comment if you have encountered this problem.

Many thanks

196.2.1xx [not sure it 192.2.xx will work]

I had the 41.208.x and I could VPN and download my mail without any hussles.

Maybe I'm the lucky one

What are the symptoms when you cannot retrieve ?
(i.e. can you connect at all ?)

Am first-time iBurst and SmoothWall firewall user - having oddities regarding email and FTP from Green zone. Via Outlook (POP3) send-receive, the dialog comes up and "knows" that there are "1 of 9 messages" to download.
Nothing arrives.

Can FTP connect to website, see login and CD but after "connecting to port 1570" and "LIST" . . . no results returned back to client.

Sound similar ?
I hadn't thought to check IP address range, but will from now on.

When we have this problem, it appears to only really affect email. We can still browse etc (although speeds seem reduced on this IP range). And we can still check our email via the online webmail interface. But when trying to download using Outlook, we get the problems coming up.

1. I had my issues with both IP ranges last night, still no-workee :-(

2. Could you elucidate on ". . . we get the problems coming up."
What are the symptoms - some error message, no connection or download begins but never finishes?

I've also been experiencing similiar problems lately, where I cannot connect to my mail server or ftp in. Happened last week for some time, my ISP said there's no problems on their side. I kept restarting my iBurst modem and on about the 4th or 5th attempt my problems where gone. Will check the next time I have this problem, didn't think about looking at my ip range.

Last time I experienced this was yesterday. My ISP says that they've been having this problem with clients on iBurst (before I told them that I was with iBurst :-)).

I'm still looking for patterns

In addition to monitoring potentially troublesome ip's, please indicate how you are connecting to the iBurst modem - ethernet or USB, whether you are behind a firewall or not and whether you are using static or dynamic ip addresses.

I have yet to get an ethernet connection working via Smoothwall for anything other than HTTP traffic. (no USB support). With direct workstation connection via USB, I've not had any issues - and there are just too many variables between my two scenarios.

(I'll try direct connection via ethernet tonight to eliminate at least one variable. I wil also suffer through a couple of connect/disconnect sessions to see if anything changes.)

I do agree that there are too many variables at play here. I'll try to assist you on both forums until we've sorted the problems out. I want to go over to iBurst, but want to see what I need to have a reliable connection, and not one which keeps on borking itself.

But it should not matter whether you use USB or Ethernet, the router's the weak link.

One further question : what happens should you let the router "dial" for you? Do you still experience the same issues?
