Can characters on different Relms send each other messages?

No you can't. You also can't send messages to a character on the opposing side even on the same realm, i.e. an alliance player cannot send message to horde player, and so on.
If you need to swap money/items between your horde and alliance alts - use neutral Auction Houses - there is one in Gadgetzan for example.

mmm, that's bad news. I was hoping to swop items between my characters, but they in different relms.

Nope you can't, remember you also cant trade soulbound items. There is however a way to get an item to a character of opposing faction using the Booty Bay or Gadgetzan Auction Houses.
