Hi all,

I sent a 6,5 Mb file consisting of some text and 4 pictures via Email. The Email was taking an unusually long time but I thought the network was slow and eventually the mail would go through, so I left it. Upon my return to check on the mail, a couple of hours later, it was still sending and the data sent was in excess of 600 Mb, of course I stopped it immediately. Why would this happen? Is there something wrong with my email? I did try and google this but its a bit difficult to phrase this type of question:confused: Well for me anyway:rolleyes:

Emails are weird sometimes. Basically what happens (depending on your email client and ISP) it will keep on trying to send out. Why? Because in sending, it times out (or connection gets reset by the email server for some odd reason, sometimes it could be because your connection switched from one cellphone tower to another that causes this) and because the connection reset, it tries to send it again (because it's in your outbox)

Now email was NEVER designed to send large files. Most ISP's block larger than 5mb files in emails and I mean WORLDWIDE as a standard they do this.

So I suggest splitting the email up in 4 parts (for the pictures)

Otherwise, I suggest using something like Facebook, and share it with people there.

There are numerous ways to reduce pic sizes. I can using picview get from about 1700kbs to about 130kbs. The results are totally exceptable.

Yes, that's one thing people don't realize, sometimes they'll send BMP files and just by opening it up in Paint and saving "as" a jpeg format can reduce the size significantly. You'll notice most of the guys also take pictures with their uber 5694587654 mega pixel cameras.

Most don't understand what a mega pixel is even.

Anything above 1 mega pixel is for your e-penis. Mega pixels determine how big a billboard you can print your photograph on. And I'm sure you're not going to need a billboard sized photograph of you in a party hat :p

So taking photos @ 640x480 resolution for the internet is way more than enough quality for someone to receive a small file :)

Thanks for all the responses;). However could anyone shed more light as to why it would continually send the message and run up data usage of 600 meg while actually not accomplishing anything? Does my email not have a setting that can be changed to stipulate that a message not sent in 3 attempts should not try again? I would hate to get another bill like the last one.

The message is being sent to your smtp server. It gets to 5mg and the server should send your client a message that its too big, but in your case maybe it does not, there is still communication so it doesn't give an error. so your client just starts again, sending the large 5 mg email.
Rinse, repeat until you get to 600 mg.
Say bugger repeatedly.

No. Your run of the mill standard Grannymail clients will just keep trying unless tinkered with - changing every send/receive to manual :P
