Hi,
I've been using the Ematic Android TV box for a long time now and it just always works. But, about two days ago, it popped up a notice to tell me that there is a huge update (700MB) available. I'm not a fan of these updates when nothing is broken, but the pop-up became so annoying I decided to just get it over with.
Unfortunately the update appeared to have broken the volume control function or, at least, once content started to play in the Netflix app one could no longer adjust the volume. There was a very brief pop-up that said "use TV remote for volume control". This surprised me - I do not have a TV, just a big monitor that feeds the audio directly into my separate amp. Blistering barnacles! How annoying!
After fidgeting with a lot of settings, it turns out that the update defaults the sound output of the Ematic to "Surround Sound". So to "enable" volume control on the Ematic again, go to the settings menu, scroll down to Device Preferences, then select Sound and go to the Surround Sound option. Set it to "never allow surround sound" and voila, you'll have you volume control back.
Of course, this is only applicable to systems that use old-school stereo, like I do.
