What encryption programs can be used to encrypt documents in emc format ie: the banks etc email you your statements in emf format therefore you have to use straita reader to open the document?

Not strictly true. Their encryption is rather flawed, and can be bypassed with a bit of effort.

FWIW, I loathe and detest the Striata emc files, because you end up in a situation where you have to download and install their proprietary decoder in order to extract them.

Why force that on your clients when encrypted/signed PDF docs are a perfectly good solution, and supported by many client side programs already?

(Yes, I know that Striata was doing this before Encrypted/Signed PDFs existed, but that is no excuse for not changing over)

Well, maybe they have changed it, but I got one from SB a couple of months ago, and it was still emc.

What are you trying to achieve/do?

I was thinking about encrypting all my documents for storig in the cloud and straita seemed the easiest to do considering their app is so small and can be used on phones etc.

While the striata reader is tiny and available on Windows, Linux, Android and iOS it's not suitable for that purpose. Rather use true crypt which will give you the same level of encryption and be easier to use.
