Been in USA over a year now and loving it. For everyone, the change is different.
How was the visa process?

Good advice this. Why Norway? And have you got a job that side?
Also curious about this. What field are you in?
Yeah - makes sense. I've been here for 16 years now and I keep hoping I'll be able to get out sooner rather than later. Thanks for teh constructive feedback guys. Really appreciate it.
As an Eastern European refugee living in SA for the most of my life, I've never really felt at home here. It always seemed as some sort of stop over if that makes any sense? So I'm just keen for the next journey to start, and perhaps settle down and build my life somewhere.
Hope to go to the States as 1st prize, but Europe as a fallback.

It's the missus who isn't keen on the idea. (The kids and I don't need visas.)Just do it. We applied for our visas about a year and a half ago and we are planning on making the move mid 2015.
I have emigrated thrice. First to the US, then to SA, and now to Netherlands.
Most difficult thing about leaving is, at first, your family. Afterwards you get used to it.
Come to Netherlands, we all speak englis here.

Everything and anything. Especially in the more modern cities like Eindhoven, there are many start-ups funded by the big boys from companies like Philips, and talent is always welcomed and paid. Basically if you got qualifications, you will find a good paying job here. What type of jobs are there in the Netherlands? Except the usual coffee houses and red light type jobs.
Interesting to know as I am looking in doing an Europe work stint.

Hmmmm. Can I PM you? Would love to know how you got there and how you got a job.
Hehe. I need to do my PHD. Don't see a problem doing it in the Netherlands.
My university (TU/e) has tons of PhD students from overseas, because they let you do it in English. Either that or you can go to the Free University of Amsterdam, which is also excellent. Plus if you are doing a PhD, you get employee status. Which is great.
Electrical Engineering. Working an average of about 140-150hrs overtime a month, so yeah...better pull up your socks when you wanna come across.I was offered a job by a Norsk company while still living in SA. It made the whole process MUCH easier with a job offer. Obviously education helps as well. Since my degree is on their critical shortage list they offered me a 3yr residence instead of the usual 1yr. Nice part is I don't have to renew it and when it lapses Iæm eligible for permanent rez.
So yeah, working hard but for a company that actually gives a damn about its staff...and everything you do is YOUR accountability, there's no lesser workers to do the heavy lifting for you. I'm profressionally registered with ECSA yet here I am sweeping floors when I'm done with commissioning to tidy up etc, wearing overalls etc. yet nobody looks down on you because skilled blue collar salaries are on par if not above white collar. I absolutely love that. Also, Iæm paying more tax now than what I grossed in SA, but I dont mind it because I can see where the tax is going...and its not Nklanda.
Good luck!

I have a British passport so technically I could fly out tomorrow. I am unsure as to why I am not using it...
I guess I want some experience here first (still young) but will probably make preparations at a later stage to leave to England.
Where are you off to?
I've got US and UK citizenship so either place will do - UK would probably be less of a shock to the missus though.Bwana, where are you from? You looking to back there?
