If I may bump this once more. Say one would make a wild swing and start studying at the ripe age of 40, would one actually get into articles.
Whats the salary like when doing articles ( CTC wise )
Once fully qualified, whats the CTC like then (yes I know it likely depends where you land up, just curious on an average)

Audit can't be that bad can it?

Are you considering starting now? Completing a bridging course?

You'd need to ask what's your ultimate goal for making the switch now.

Audit is crazy hours and not really worth it unless you aim to make partner or use it to relocate. Otherwise most people leave audit after articles.

Depending on the size of the firm you start at, if I were to totally guess at random the starting salary can be anywhere from R6k to R10k. Im not sure that big 4 firms hire anyone without a degree, perhaps if you are in a small town where by chance there is a big 4 office, then you might get lucky. Other wise you will be looking at medium to smaller firms. So you will be looking at the lower bracket of pay, since you are essentially, in terms of accounting knowledge, not worth more than someone with matric and smaller firms will offer less than the bigger firms. Your articles will be 5 years instead of the normal 3 if you were to start doing articles and study from scratch.

However one of my friends left banking at like 36 to switch to audit and started from scratch, he is almost qualified, so it is doable. Once you are fully qualified the range of salary bump is too broad to even ballpark. It will also depend if you stay in the practice or if you go into corporate. Some people would say that you are at least worth anything between R30k and R100k a month, maybe even more but then it comes to CEO level type of pay, so it depends on the position you end up in (assuming you go into corporate).

Ag then I guess sticking it out in my little corner till I go on pension one day is better. In terms of salary I wont be able to stomach the junior pay ( I knew I would maybe take a cut, but yeah, not those figures, not even the starting qualified level of what you are talking about if they are CTC ) . Eh, guess I just need different hobbies to keep my mind sharp lol. Guess I should refrain from posting when I am having a low day lol

I mean its good to ask, to know about your options out there. And there will always be work for auditors in South Africa, especially for people who need to do their articles.
