Just saw this on the BBC website.

It seems that UK service providers are parsing SMS' for emoticons and then converting them to MMS' which are transmitted at a higher rate.

Does anyone know if a similar practice is engaged in by our operators?

It seems like too good a scam not to have been exploited fully by our own homegrown Cellula bandits.

I've been finding my charges for SMS' a little confusing and I'm wondering if this is the reason.

I am 90% certain they do the same here in RSA.
Except for basic Emoticons like :-) or :-(
For ones like this :) the charge mms rates.

the people who use emoicons in sms dont have phones that can handle mms. or they would use any of the millions of IM's out there
