Hi Community,

I want to buy one of these goodies for my son for Xmas, can any one suggest if this is a good idea or not, ie is it a good quality device, how long are the controller cables, will it plug into my Sony Bravia 40' TV etc

https://www.takealot.com/empire-family-unit-tv-games-with-500-games/PLID46872029

Are there any other similar consoles I can look at that may be better?

As I`m not a huge fan of Takealot I would prefer to buy it elsewhere, or from the local China mall.

Thanks for the info

He is 4. He is getting the hang of playing on the PS3 but the controller is too big for his hands and too many buttons for the gameplay, hence something a bit smaller.

i've got the mini version of this, i changed the controllers to the generic old school arcade ones and overall it works great
the kid loves it although to be honest i only put it on for her like once a month or so.

i also have the raspberry pi retropi setup that i prefer, i have the simply austin image that gives you a preview of the games etc so you can see what the game is like, it also includes the artwork which is cool.
i would def recommend that if its within your budget

The retropi requires me to purchase a raspberry pi and the controllers seperately and put it all together?
Sounds great but I dont have the time for this now, I literally just want to plug and play.

If I get the time to in future this is def something I would build, but into an arcade type cabinet if I`m understanding it all correctly.

yeah there is a little work to be done with the Pi but its worth it if you can find the time, for plug and play the empire console should meet all your needs then.

The console requires AV inputs so if the bravia has those (which it should) then you'd be good to go.

I bought one for somebody and it's great... Not sure a 4 year old would appreciate retro games... You can get the full specs from the importers. http://www.empiregaming.co.za/

He likes the action of gaming, like moving forward, jumping etc, but with the PS3 there are just too many buttons and he gets confused about which ones to press next.

I figured if I started him off with a simple up-down-left-right-shoot game or two that would help him get into the game more and enjoy it, rather than getting him tied up with how many buttons you need to press on the the PS3 games to achieve something.

And besides, if he doesn`t dig it then it`s fine, I grew up on arcade games and Atari, so no loss there, I get to revisit my childhood favourites again :)
