So a friend of mine was interviewed by Company XYZ for a position . then they sent him the following email regretting that they could not offer him the job

While your CV speaks for itself and you proved to me more than competent to do the work, your salary expectation is above what we can afford at the moment.

Because this is a new branch we do need to consider costs unfortunately and while you might be worth the CTC you mentioned, we simply cannot afford this right now and that is probably the only reason we won’t be offering you’re a position.

We are instead now looking for 2 mid-range technicians rather than a junior and a senior and we have already filled one position.

Thank you for your time and patience though, I am sure with your skills and ability you will find something soon that fits your salary bracket as well.

Kind regards,

Today he got a call from the same company saying that they wanted to see him and discuss engaging him in their employ . I told him i smell a rat

Try using a colour other than light green to highlight text, makes it difficult for us old people :D Consider using
[~quote][~/quote]
without the '~'

Awful green text is awful.

Spelling errors and bad grammar make me cautious, but then I'm paranoid when any formal correspondence looks as though it had been written by a grade 7 pupil.

Tell your friend to be wary. But chances are good he'd have better luck and be happier elsewhere.

Companies that interview me and get me back for a 2nd interview where we negotiate CTC and me saying I'm happier with less since they'll be offering medical aid as well etc, and then turn around saying they'll hire 2 mid-level/4 juniors instead can go **** themselves. They obviously have money to waste on n00bs ;)

I'm surprised they didn't bother negotiating a salary. That and the poor grammar suggest that he's probably better off elsewhere anyway. If he has to deal with this type of behaviour now, chances are that it would be much worse while working for them.

They are basically offering him the junior position at the junior position salary if he wants it.

Its a nasty ploy by some companies to get great qualified people at junior level salaries. Lousy company to get involved with because they unscrupulously prey on qualified people who just might be desperate for a job.

Too little information to give valid input. If it where a small company, then I would agree that its a bad attempt at getting your buddy at a lower CTC price, but if it is a large corporate with a structured HR process then it makes sense not to be able to meet his salary expectations at a junior level but to ask him to be interviewed at a mid level instead.

Tell him to still go for the interview, worst that could happen is he gets offered the job and then tells them no.

I agree, not enough information. Is this a network technician? In my opinion, network technicians don't get paid much anyways, they are the low rank type of job where you go out and look at people's network connections, like the guy installing your telkom line.

Network architects, network engineers ect. will get a much better salary than a network technician, even if its a senior network technician.

Also, its funny how you guys judge a company based on grammar in a letter. It says more about the person who wrote the letter than the company imho.

The company could have avoided this by stating the salary in the beginning.

It sounds like they want skilled people but want to pay bottom dollar. Walk away...
