So, I've been turned down for an interview at the university I work at, because even though the faculty said they don't want the position to be an EE position anymore after the previous EE staff member resigned, HR is enforcing that they redo their shortlist for interview candidates to only have EE qualifying people on it.

Is this right? Can they do this, even though the people who are making the decision in the interviews/etc. no longer see it necessary for the position to be strictly for EE?

PS. I know I was going to get an interview because I have been in talks with the manager for the last 2 weeks about the position.

Also, the job ad didn't say ONLY EE. The manager I had been speaking to even went to verify with their director that the position is no longer EE.

Nothing you can do about it, only move onto the next opportunity.

You weren't at the interview point yet, never mind having a written offer in hand (which is a mission to enforce anyway).

Move onto the next opportunity, or stay buddy buddy with the manager so that in the event that no good EE canditates present themeselves, he can motivate why you should be put onto the shortlist.

P.S. HR can do whatever they want, line managers will always suck the hind tit when it comes to transformation objectives.

I feel for you! I know that it is also an unwritten rule from HR at our tertiary institution that only EE candidates should be appointed in permament positions. Thank our government for this.

And history, lots of old white people still employed in Academics. Unfortunately the problem is also young black applicants entering academics are also poached off by other firms trying to booster their EE portfolio.

I am a black male and I will say it was wrong what they did. It seems that BEE is being abused when unqualified applicants will get preference. I still see the need BEE, but not in its current format.

Lol the OP says he scored an interview because he decided to be buddy buddy with the manager -- aka using personal connections to your advantage, which by the way is not a crime, but then he gets mad when it doesn't go the way he planned (hypocrisy).

Actually I would say that the manager that you are buddy buddy with was in the wrong for raising your expectations without understanding the hiring constraints being imposed by HR.

If he had kept his yap shut on both his opinion on hiring policies and until HR had laid down the law, this would not have upset you in the first place.
