Emulator gaming

I have a Nintendo Wii with a few games, but to be honest would like a retro system. Arcade games, some N64/Gamecube, Sega Megadrive/Saturn...MAYBE the 3DO if available.

Retropie runs a ton of games. The trick with Mame though is to get the correct rom set - there are different rom sets for the same games that are compatible with different versions of Mame. Whichever way you look at it, it can be a pain to set up but works like a dream when it's up.

All you ever need

...and I take it no need to add a GFX card to the Pi, right? Or are there some recommendations for this just to be able to play emulator games?

No GFX card for the Pi :D

Works pretty well for older Systems like N64 Mame and so on. But like I said before No-Go on PS3 (Hell even My i7 7700 + Nvidia 1050 have issues with PS3 emulation) PS2 is hit and miss depending on rom's and R400 secondhand so not worth the effort. You could go for an older Slim or Fat PS3 to play PS1/2 game but they tend to Yellow ring of death so not for me.

PS2 Fat + PS3 Superslim + Pi = Sorted :D

Just use OpenEMU, not sure about PS3> etc but this will run all older stuff and its got a lot in one installation.

This is a nice libretro frontend but MacOS only, not sure this would be a good recommendation for a general thread.

I saw a YouTube video where somebody emulated a PS3 on a recent AMD APU, like a 4600G or something.

So that's another option - an even more recent AMD APU, like the 5600G, would slay anything PS2 level or below, and probably run PS3 level games just fine.

Thats the pain with PS3 emulation, the Nature of Cell tech is that it rather more core's vs stronger ones.
8+ core systems will have less of a problem than a powerful 4 core PC.

R1500 for a secondhand PS3 is still easier & cheaper ;)

Edit: Holy cow.... no wonder it performs emulation with eaze 24348 passmark vs my crappy old 9711
Pi 4 sits at a measly 1603

I'm on my way to sell my PS3.
I just have so many things I keep and almost never use. The benefit of an emulator is that I can keep a HD with everything in my PC, and it doesn't take up space in the house and annoy the wife.

I get you, and that is where I am lucky... MRS's gave me a corner.... hence the Emulation Station :D

When I was on that subject, I downloaded all the PS3 games I own via https://psndl.net/
And seriously tried emulating them but both my Gaming PC and Laptop went nope so I opted to keep the physical PS3 instead. Besides I still have a Play & Move + the guns so there is no emulating that :D

Edit: If only Sony went Xbox route and bring the games forward somehow to newer systems :(
Hell even if PS Now was readily available in SA, it would do wonders... but nope.
Even worse that the games that is on PS4 and I own on PS3 I have to buy again to play on new system :(

Anyone got a decent site/s for the following emulators:

  1. SNES
  2. Arcade games
  3. N64/Gamecube
  4. Panasonic 3DO
  5. Sega Dreamcast
  6. Sega Saturn

Want to start building up a repository. I'd then ideally like to plan on building a single platform to run these (the Raspberry Pi looks good, and hopefully it plays all the above).

Only need 1 emulator, retroarch, you just need to get the core's for the systems you wanna emulate.

As for where to get them, that is a game of its own.... good luck ;)

Oh Man, I would have killed for this as a kid...

sadly growing up we only had em LCD Nintendo Game & watch games :(
I prefer this wider shape:

The other option is something like this which is actually very powerful.

That could work 2, but honestly my grown kid is actually drooling over this All I can say Daaaaaaaaaaam on the £799 price :D

Seeing that I am not in UK, guess I'll go all DIY and make my own Pi power one :D

Edit: Nevamind.... found the next best thing:
Edit2: Crap... out of stock :(

It's been a while since I dabbled in MAME. 20 years to be exact.
A while ago I acquired an emulator and some ROMs, but most of the stuff I tried didn't work.

Any tips to get something set up quickly and easily, where almost everything I try will work?
I'm trying the same thing 20+ last play on MAME and the rom's I have backed up doesn't work anymore. I have droid4all on my phone, and I want to side load it on my xioami tv box s and see performance.
